KCB Executive Rosemary Koech Buried Overnight Despite Court Order

KCB senior executive Rosemary Koech Chemutai was reportedly buried at her parents’ home in Chepseon, Kericho County, in a hurried night ceremony, hours after her husband obtained a court order seeking to stop her burial.

Chemutai’s family had planned to lay her to rest at the Chepseon home on Saturday, August 29. However, a dispute over her final rites escalated on Friday after her husband, Kevin Migwe Kimwatu, moved to court seeking to stop the burial without his involvement.

Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi subsequently issued interim orders barring Chemutai’s family, KCB and other respondents from removing her remains from Lee Funeral Home or conducting her burial without Kimwatu’s involvement.

The matter is scheduled to return to court on Monday, August 31.Despite the order, reports emerging on Saturday indicate that Chemutai was taken to her parents’ home and buried during the night.

Family had planned Saturday burial

Chemutai’s family had announced that her funeral would take place at her parents’ home in Chepseon on Saturday morning. Plans changed after Kimwatu went to court, arguing that he had been excluded from arrangements for his wife’s final send-off.

In his court papers, Kimwatu said he wanted Chemutai buried at his ancestral home in Matasia, Kajiado County. He also accused her family of planning to bury her in Kericho without involving him.

Court documents show that Chemutai had listed her sister, Judy Koech-Oyamo, and her son, Charles Migwe Kimwatu, as next of kin in KCB’s employment records.

The bank subsequently wrote to Lee Funeral Home authorizing the two to liaise over the release and burial arrangements.

That decision became part of the dispute before court, with Kimwatu challenging his exclusion from arrangements despite being Chemutai’s husband.

The court order issued on Friday specifically barred any burial without his involvement and consent.

Burial dispute follows death of KCB executive

Chemutai, who was 40, died on August 21 after a career spanning law, technology, public policy and data protection. She had been serving as KCB’s Head of Data Protection within the Risk Division.

Her death was followed by a growing dispute over her burial, with her family favouring Chepseon while her husband sought to have her buried in Matasia.

Kimwatu told court that he and Chemutai had been married since 2013 and had four children. He also said they had separated for about four months before her death but had reconciled.

With the court now set to consider the dispute further, Chemutai’s reported night burial has added a new twist to a case that had already moved from a family disagreement into the courtroom.
