Who Owns PCEA? Inside Its History, Founders, Wealth, Members and Controversial Hotel Debt

The Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) is one of Kenya’s largest and oldest Christian denominations with a history of more than 180 years.

PCEA began as a Scottish missionary movement in 1891, and it has grown into a church with millions of members, schools, a hospital, a university, and a big property portfolio.

The church has recently faced financial and governance challenges, including a long-running debt crisis linked to its Milele Beach Hotel in Mombasa.

The origin of PCEA dates back to 1889, when Scottish businessmen Sir William Mackinnon and Alexander Low Bruce backed plans to establish a mission in British East Africa.

Founders Of PCEA

In 1891, missionary Thomas Watson led a team that arrived in Kibwezi, where they established the East African Scottish Mission.

Scottish missionaries built their first temporary church and a school, but malaria later made them relocate to Dagoretti, then to Thogoto in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.

From these stations, the mission expanded rapidly across Central Kenya before reaching Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi and other regions.

Other Scots also played crucial roles in the founding of the church; they include Dr. James Stewart, Dr. John Arthur, John Paterson and John Greig.

A turning point for the church came when it ordained its first African ministers, Reverend Musa Gitau, Reverend Benjamin Githieya and Reverend Joshua Matenjwa.

This step marked the gradual transition from missionary leadership to African leadership.

Evolution of PCEA

Modern PCEA emerged through several institutional changes: in 1891 the East African Scottish Mission was established; in 1898, it was renamed the Church of Scotland Mission after it moved inland.

In 1920, Presbyterian Church governance was formally introduced; in 1946, the Gospel Missionary Society joined the church’s structures, and in 1956, separate Presbyterian bodies merged to form the Presbyterian Church of East Africa.

Unlike churches that are led by Bishops, PCEA follows a Presbyterian governance system built through church courts.

Its hierarchy includes the congregation, parish session, Presbytery, general assembly, which is the church’s highest decision-making body. The top leader of the church is the moderator of the General Assembly.

Over more than a century, PCEA accumulated assets that include Presbyterian University of East Africa, PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, PCEA Chogoria Hospital, PCEA Tumutumu Hospital, schools, colleges, churches, and mission centres.

Financial Controversies

One of PCEA’s biggest financial controversies is about Milele Beach Hotel, which is located in Bamburi, Mombasa County.

The church borrowed hundreds of millions of shillings to expand the property and construct luxury apartments.

However, delays, rising costs, and market disruptions left the project struggling to repay its loans, which it is now encouraging members of the church to pay.

Church leaders asked presbyteries and congregants to contribute towards clearing the debt, arguing that the hotel remained an important church investment and that, when they pay the debt, they are giving to God.

The fundraising campaign generated public debate over whether ordinary worshippers should shoulder the burden of a commercial project which does not even benefit them.

PCEA Now

The church introduced schools alongside its earliest mission stations, pioneered agricultural training, established hospitals and continues running educational institutions across the country.

More than 130 years after Scottish missionaries first landed in Kibwezi, PCEA remains one of East Africa’s most influential churches.

Its influence extends beyond religion into education, healthcare and property development.

Yet its recent financial struggles, particularly the Milele Beach Hotel debt, have highlighted the challenges of balancing spiritual leadership with management of large commercial investments.
