President William Ruto has revealed that Kenya’s push to host the Grammy Awards is part of a wider strategy to attract global music investment and establish the country as a permanent centre for African creative production.

Speaking at the AmCham Business Summit in Nairobi on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, Ruto said the government was looking beyond the prestige of hosting a major international music ceremony and instead seeking to build an ecosystem capable of attracting studios, record labels, digital platforms and investors.

“Our ambition to host the Grammy Awards is not about one ceremony or one moment of fun and fanfare. It is about attracting studios, labels, platforms and investors and making Kenya a permanent centre of African creative production,” Ruto said.

He called on American industry leaders to partner with Kenya in developing the sector, linking the initiative to the longstanding commercial relationship between the two countries.

“We invite American industry leaders to work with us in building this ecosystem. This opportunity is built on a Kenya-United States partnership that is deep, tested and proven,” he said.

Kenya’s Grammy push gains wider industry backing

Ruto’s latest remarks build on an initiative that has been taking shape through Kenya’s engagement with the Recording Academy, the organisation behind the Grammy Awards.

In April, the Academy announced that its president, Panos A. Panay, would travel to Nairobi for an official meeting with Ruto and discussions with senior government officials.

The engagement was expected to focus on talent development, industry infrastructure and international market access as part of efforts to strengthen Kenya’s position in the global music ecosystem.

The Academy also said Kenya had been selected for the American Music Mentorship Program for a second consecutive year, creating another link between Kenyan music professionals and experienced United States-based mentors.

That engagement followed the Recording Academy’s wider expansion efforts across Africa and the Middle East, which include working with partners to strengthen creative economies and expand opportunities for music creators.

For Kenya, the proposed Grammy platform has therefore developed alongside efforts to strengthen the infrastructure and professional networks needed to support a larger music industry.

From Grammy ceremony to creative industry hub

Ruto had earlier tied the Grammy ambition to plans for world-class recording facilities in Kenya.

In August 2025, he said he would engage the Recording Academy on plans to establish high-end studios and set the country on a path towards eventually hosting an African edition of the Grammys in Nairobi.

The government has since continued to frame the creative sector as part of Kenya’s wider economic ambitions.

During the 2026 Kalasha International Film and TV Market, Festival and Awards, Ruto said countries seeking to lead the creative economy should move beyond simply participating in global productions and instead invest in and own parts of them.

He also said he would engage Panay on positioning Kenya and Africa for a globally recognised creative platform.

Nairobi is also being positioned to accommodate more major entertainment productions.

In April, Ruto witnessed the signing of an agreement for a modern multi-purpose arena and entertainment district at Nairobi Railway City, which the government said would support creative industries and host international events.

At the AmCham summit, Ruto’s latest remarks placed the Grammy ambition within that broader push, with the focus shifting from the event itself to the investment, infrastructure and international partnerships that could strengthen Kenya’s position in Africa’s creative economy.
