IEBC Sets Record Straight on Viral KU Voter Registration Video

Gachagua has raised concerns over the IEBC technology tender, alleging that MIRU Systems of South Korea has already been lined up for the contract.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has clarified its voter registration exercise at Kenyatta University following the circulation of a video clip on social media concerning the process.

The video circulating on social media showed young men confronting an IEBC clerk who had set up a voter registration desk at Kenyatta University amid allegations of unlawfully registering or transferring students to vote in a different county, including Wajir.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, September 10, 2026, the commission explained the difference between Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and voter transfer services while addressing concerns raised by the video.

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is aware of a video clip circulating on social media regarding a voter registration exercise undertaken at Kenyatta University. The Commission wishes to put the record straight on the ongoing continuous voter registration and voter transfer processes,” IEBC stated.

IEBC Explains Kenyatta University Voter Registration

According to the commission, it is a constitutional right for every eligible Kenyan citizen to apply for registration and vote at any polling station of choice.

However, IEBC clarified that voter transfer services are currently offered at its constituency offices across the country and not in any other place.

At the same time, the commission said it is currently undertaking Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) at all 290 IEBC Constituency Offices, all Huduma Centres and the Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi.

“Where necessary and based on operational considerations, the Commission deploys voter registration kits to strategic locations to reach out and register eligible Kenyan citizens like what happened in Kenyatta University,” IEBC stated.

As a result, the presence of IEBC registration officials at Kenyatta University formed part of the commission’s outreach to eligible citizens and did not amount to the provision of voter transfer services at the university.

IEBC Clarifies Voter Transfer Process

Meanwhile, IEBC explained that acknowledgement slips are only issued to newly registered voters and not those seeking to transfer their voting station because their details are already in the register of voters.

Beyond that, the commission stressed that its role is to facilitate the registration of eligible Kenyans as voters and does not direct, compel or influence voters to select a particular polling station.

“The role of the IEBC is to facilitate the registration of eligible Kenyans as voters and DOES NOT direct, compel or influence voters to select a particular polling station,” the commission stated.

Following the controversy, IEBC said it had taken the allegations in the clip with the seriousness they deserved and was working with relevant government agencies to take appropriate action in accordance with the law, including making arrests where there is culpability.

The commission also urged members of the public to refrain from interfering with its processes as it endeavours to discharge its mandate.

Finally, IEBC urged members of the public to rely only on official information from the commission and cautioned against the use of misinformation to disrupt peaceful coexistence among Kenyans.
