LDP Responds to Claims of Sifuna and Orengo Taking Charge of the Party

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Political Leader Fred Ogola has rejected claims that the party has endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna or been taken over by Siaya Governor James Orengo.
In a statement on Thursday, October 1, Ogola issued the clarification following reports linking LDP to the two politicians as political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election continue to take shape.
“The Party has not resolved, through any of its lawful organs, to support the candidature of any individual for the 2027 General Election.” The statement said.
Ogola Affirms LDP Leadership
Ogola said he remains the party’s Presidential Candidate and Political Leader, adding that LDP has not changed its leadership.
He urged members and supporters to treat reports suggesting otherwise as rumours, saying any official change must come through the party’s recognised structures.
Ogola also cautioned against declarations made in the party’s name without the involvement of its leadership, saying members should not treat such statements as LDP’s official position.

The party leader further said individuals seeking to contest through LDP must first join the party and submit themselves to its constitution, structures and nomination procedures.
“A party does not join an individual. As a matter of principle and law, individuals join political parties; a political party cannot join an individual,” he said.
Ogola specifically referred to Sifuna and Orengo, claiming that both remain lifetime members of ODM, continue to pay membership dues and hold positions within the party.
“As far as we know, both Senator Sifuna and Governor Orengo are still Lifetime Members of ODM, they still pay ODM dues and still draw money from ODM as ODM Officials hence cannot represent another Party.”
Party Rejects Claims of Rebranding
Ogola also rejected claims that LDP had been taken over or turned into a political vehicle for Orengo’s ambitions.
He said no application had been made by LDP, or authorized on its behalf, to change the party’s name, symbols or leadership.
“Nobody can take over the Party, or declare its support for any candidate or formation, without the Party Leader being consulted.”
Ogola maintained that ownership of LDP rests with its membership rather than an individual, arguing that this prevents any one person from taking control of the party.

“LDP is the only Party in Kenya that is not owned by individuals; it’s owned by members, so it cannot be taken over by anyone.”
Ogola said the party will announce its position if it decides to enter an alliance, cooperate with another political formation, or support a presidential candidate.
He added that the party would communicate such a decision through an official statement issued jointly by the party leader and all national officials.
Further, Ogola urged LDP members, supporters, the media and the public to rely on communication issued through the party’s official channels and disregard reports that do not reflect decisions made through its lawful structures.
He said LDP remains committed to issue-based politics, internal democracy and the constitutional order, while welcoming Kenyans who share its vision to join and participate through the party’s established structures.
