Police in Kisii recovered hundreds of suspected stolen mobile phones after a coordinated operation targeting a mobile phone theft and trafficking network operating within Kisii Township on May 5, 2026.
Detectives from Kisii Central teamed up with officers from M-KOPA Kenya Limited and carried out a carefully planned raid that led to the recovery of multiple electronic devices suspected to be part of a wider theft syndicate.
Acting on intelligence gathered after an earlier arrest, officers moved to St. Jude’s Building in Kisii Township. They then launched a targeted search and recovery mission at the premises.
“The raid was linked to the earlier arrest of 44-year-old Harrison Ndirangu Mwirerie, who is suspected of being a key handler of stolen mobile phones,” the DCI reported.

After the initial operation, officers returned to the building for a deeper sweep. They expanded the search and uncovered more mobile devices suspected to be part of the illegal trade.
During the operation, officers recovered 56 M-KOPA HMD and Nokia smartphones, alongside 233 assorted mobile phones. They secured all the devices at the scene and moved them for forensic analysis to establish ownership and trace their origin.

Investigators said the recovery would help disrupt a wider network involved in mobile phone theft and resale. They continued pursuing additional suspects linked to the syndicate.
Meanwhile, authorities held the main suspect in lawful custody. They continued processing him ahead of his arraignment in court as detectives built the case.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reiterated its commitment to dismantling mobile phone theft syndicates and bringing all perpetrators to justice.
