Eyewitness Narrates How He Tried Helping Journalist Rose Mbugua After the Accident

An eyewitness has shared a detailed account of the moments following the fatal road accident that claimed the life of journalist Rose Mbugua on the evening of Friday, July 17, 2026, along Uhuru Highway in Nairobi.

In a reply shared on social media, ‘Jack Ndungu ’, the witness recounted how he recovered Rose’s belongings and helped connect her family with the authorities after they reached her phone while emergency responders and police handled the scene.

“I took her phone (cracked iphone-purple in color), her handbag and a carrier back she had and gave it to the traffic cops present! but before i did that, the sister called stacy called and i picked the call, i directed her to the university way round about coz she was in Westlands,” he wrote in the reply.

According to Jack Ndungu, he directed Stacy to the University Way roundabout, explaining that she had been in Westlands at the time.

Jack Ndungu also disclosed that another caller, described as a boda boda rider from South C, contacted Rose’s phone, and he informed him about the accident, after which the caller shared what he said was Rose’s boyfriend’s Airtel number, but Ndungu said the line was unavailable.

“Some bodaboda guy from South C also called her phone, and I broke the news to him, and on the spot he gave me his boyfriend’s Airtel number, but he was Mtejaa,”

He further revealed that he used the motorcycle rider’s phone to contact Uber’s emergency service, which dispatched an ambulance to the scene.

Jack Ndungu said the ambulance was only able to attend to the motorcycle rider, who indicated he was fine, although Ndungu believed he appeared injured.

“An ambulance came, but it could only help the rider, who later said he’s fine, but on the look of things, he didn’t seem ok,” he stated.

Rider and Lorry Driver Taken Into Police Custody

In addition, Jack stated that bystanders were unable to assist Rose because she had already died by the time emergency efforts were underway.

Following the incident, he requested one of the women at the scene to cover Rose’s body as a sign of respect while they waited for police officers to arrive.

“I asked one of the mamas standing there to give her her last respect kwa kumfunika tu, and one woman volunteered her sholl akamfunika as we waited for the police landcruiser to ferry her to city mortuary,” Jack Ndungu stated.

Meanwhile, the eyewitness said the motorcycle involved in the crash and the concrete lorry were both escorted to the police station, and both the motorcycle rider and the lorry driver were placed in police custody pending investigations.

The accident that claimed Rose Mbugua’s life occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday near the University Way roundabout.

According to preliminary investigations, both the motorcycle and a Foton concrete mixer were travelling from the Westlands direction towards the Nairobi Central Business District when the motorcycle rider reportedly hit the pavement, lost control and crashed into the left side of the truck.

The impact threw Mbugua, who was travelling as a pillion passenger, off the motorcycle and she sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
