Flood Crisis Deepens in Kenya as NPS Issues Urgent Safety Advisory

Share

As heavy rains continue to batter several regions, creating serious risks for travel and daily activities, the National Police Service (NPS) Kenya has urged all Kenyans to prioritise safety during this period.

According to the advisory issued on April 4, 2026, 112 people have lost their lives due to the rains as of April 3, 2026.

“Vigilance and responsibility remain critical to preventing further loss of life,” the advisory stated.

“The combination of adverse weather conditions and increased movement of people across the country during the holiday period significantly raises safety risks,” NPS added.

Motorists Must Exercise Caution

Police strongly advised drivers to take extra care on the roads. The advisory instructs motorists to observe speed limits, remain patient on the roads, maintain safe distances, avoid flooded roads, and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition.

Officials warn that ignoring these instructions can have fatal consequences.

“Drivers should plan their routes carefully, avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas, and check the mechanical condition of their vehicles before setting out,” the advisory emphasized.

Pedestrians Need to Stay Alert

Pedestrian safety also remains a priority. Police urge individuals to stay vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas or locations with poor visibility.

“Pedestrians are equally encouraged to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding or poor visibility. Alertness and caution can prevent accidents and save lives,” the advisory stressed.

Public Cooperation Remains Vital

As authorities continue to restore damaged infrastructure, including roads and drainage systems, the advisory urges the public to cooperate fully with these operations.

“The public is urged to cooperate with authorities, observe all safety advisories, and avoid restricted or high-risk areas,” NPS stated.

Police stressed that ignoring safety measures could worsen the situation.

“Kenyans must follow all safety instructions and avoid shortcuts through unsafe areas,” the advisory added.

Emergency Lines Open Around the Clock

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property during the floods.

The advisory reminded the public that emergencies can be reported via toll-free numbers 999 or 911. Incidents can also be reported through the #FichuaKwaDCI platform on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

Police conclude by urging Kenyans to act responsibly, stay informed, and prioritise safety as the Easter holiday progresses.
