Former FKF President Calls for Hussein Mohammed to Resign After Eritrea Draw

Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has called on the Kenyan government to intervene in the running of football after Harambee Stars drew with Eritrea in their AFCON 2027 qualifier.

In a statement dated September 26, Nyamweya described the result as a national shame and accused the FKF leadership of failing to create the right conditions for the national team.

He also called for FKF president Hussein Mohammed to leave office, blaming his leadership for what he described as growing problems within Kenyan football.

Nyamweya Criticises FKF Leadership

Nyamweya said the draw exposed deeper problems within the federation, claiming that FKF had failed to provide proper leadership and support to the national team.

“This was not a draw on the pitch. It was a failure in the boardroom,” Nyamweya said.

He accused FKF of being divided and unable to speak with one voice, arguing that such an environment affects the national team.

“A Federation that does not speak in one voice, a Federation fighting itself, cannot lead a national team,” he added.

Claims Players Went Unpaid

Nyamweya also raised concerns about the welfare of the Harambee Stars players. He claimed the players had not trained properly because their allowances had not been paid and their welfare had been neglected.

“Our boys did not train because they had not been paid. Their allowances were unpaid, their welfare ignored,” he said.

Nyamweya argued that better support for the players could have changed the outcome of the match.

“Had the players’ welfare been taken care of, we would have easily won this game,” he claimed.

Questions Coaching Staff and League

The former FKF president also questioned the status of the national team’s coaching staff, alleging that some members of the technical bench did not have work permits.

“Our coaching staff has no work permit. FKF is running the national team with an illegal bench,” Nyamweya claimed.

He further linked the team’s performance to the state of domestic football, arguing that players lacked match fitness because of disruptions in the local league.

“Our players have not touched a ball because FKF has killed the league. No competition, no match fitness, no rhythm,” he said.

Warns Ahead of AFCON 2027

Nyamweya warned that the problems within Kenyan football could become more serious as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

He questioned whether the current FKF leadership could successfully prepare the national team for the tournament.

“And this is the team that wants to take us to AFCON 2027?” Nyamweya asked.

He urged the Ministry of Sports to intervene, saying the government should act before the country hosts the continental tournament.

“I am calling upon the Government of Kenya to act now. The Ministry of Sports must intervene to save Kenyan football,” he said.

He Calls for Hussein Mohammed to Leave

Nyamweya directly blamed FKF president Hussein Mohammed for the situation and called for his resignation.

“Hussein Mohammed has failed. His shenanigans have brought us here. He must pack and go,” he said.

Nyamweya, who served as FKF president before the current administration, urged stakeholders to take action to protect the future of Kenyan football.

“For the love of the game, save Kenyan football,” he said.
