Burkina Faso military government has broken off diplomatic ties with France, its former colonial ruler, following a thorough assessment of its current state of bilateral relations.
“The government of Burkina Faso hereby informs the national and international community that it has decided to sever diplomatic relations with France with effect from today, June 26, 2026,” said in a statement read out on national television.
This move widens a rupture with its former colonial ruler, France.
Why Burkina Faso Severed Ties.
Communications Minister Gilbert Ouedraogo accused France of persistently going against its interests, saying, “The essential conditions for promoting relations based on mutual respect, reciprocal trust, respect for the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and national sovereignty are not in place.”

Moreover, as the minister reports, France is harboring new colonial ambitions manifested through supporting subversive networks and terrorists.
This specific claim highlights a complete breakdown of trust between the two nations, thus leading to the instant severance.
France’s Reaction to Burkina Faso’s Decision to Sever Ties.
As per the statement by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson on 26th June 2026, “French regrets this hostile and baseless decision which illustrates the worrying drift in Burkinabe authorities’ behavior. The necessary reciprocal measures are currently being considered.”

By labeling Burkina Faso’s claims as hostile and baseless, France rejects the accusations of meddling in internal affairs or aiding insurgent networks in the Sahel.
Following Burkina Faso’s complete severing of ties on June 26, 2026, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announced that the reciprocal measures are “currently under review.”
In addition to that, France issued a high-level safety warning to its citizens and state personnel still inside Burkina Faso, urging “heightened vigilance” amid fears of anti-French escalation.
This exchange marks a historic shift in West African geopolitics, further diminishing France’s post-colonial sphere of influence in the Sahel region.
