Gachagua Reveals His Next Move After High Court Ruling

All Eyes on Gachagua After Impeachment Ruling Stands

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a formal press statement following the High Court’s ruling on Monday, June 8, 2026, which upheld his impeachment.

Speaking in a press conference on June 9, Gachagua revealed his next move.

“A long-standing legal principle of natural justice and the right to a fair hearing has been disregarded and ignored in broad daylight. It is a sad day for those who have faced similar challenges in the past and for those who may encounter the same in the future,” Gachagua said

“We will proceed to file an appeal at the Court of Appeal challenging the decision, in the hope that justice will ultimately prevail. The framers of the Constitution provided for both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, and we intend to pursue all available legal avenues.”

Gachagua Calls for a Single Opposition Candidate

Speaking after the court ruling, Gachagua said his supporters had directed him to begin consultations with political leaders and opinion-shapers to help unite the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to Gachagua, he has been asked to return to his Wamunyoro home and engage leaders within his political camp to seek their approval to initiate negotiations aimed at identifying a single presidential candidate.

“My supporters have asked me to move to Wamunyoro and meet opinion leaders, the people who matter in our political affiliation, to seek their mandate and authority to initiate negotiations,” he said.

He added that his supporters believe presenting one opposition candidate against President William Ruto is the only viable path to unseat the current administration in the 2027 election.

The Ruling

A three-judge bench of the High Court delivered its long-awaited judgment on petitions challenging Gachagua’s removal from office, ultimately upholding the impeachment process carried out by Parliament and the Senate.

The ruling means the court has validated the constitutional process that led to his removal in October 2024, when the Senate voted to impeach him on multiple charges, including allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.

Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly and later confirmed removed by the Senate in October 2024, making him the first Kenyan Deputy President to be successfully removed from office under the 2010 Constitution.

He later moved to court, arguing that the process was unfair, unconstitutional, and politically motivated, leading to a prolonged legal battle that has now been concluded by the High Court ruling.

Gachagua also announced that he will retreat to his Wamunyoro residence for 45 days to hold consultations with political stakeholders and supporters as he charts his next political move.

He said Kenyans should not expect to see him at public events during this period, as he focuses on discussions that he described as critical to the country’s future.

“We have from our corner two plans that we shall discuss with stakeholders for 45 days. You will not see me anywhere in public. I will be in Wamunyoro doing very serious and extensive consultations because it is extremely critical for the country,” he said.

According to Gachagua, the first option involves mobilising support across the country in the event that consultations and the agreed selection formula favour him as the opposition’s presidential flag bearer.

Under the second option, he said he would seek the approval of his supporters to work with other opposition principals in identifying and backing a single candidate if the agreed formula does not favour him.

Pledges Support for Chosen Candidate

Despite expressing confidence in his own chances, Gachagua said he remains committed to opposition unity and the search for a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

He argued that he possesses the experience, political networks, campaign infrastructure and support base needed to mount a competitive presidential bid.

“I remain hopeful that I will be the candidate. I have the capacity, infrastructure, presidential experience, necessary networks and mobilisation capacity behind me,” he said.

However, he added that if another opposition leader is selected through the agreed process, he would fully support that individual.

“If any of my colleagues agrees, we shall rally behind the chosen person to restore and serve the Kenyan nation,” he said.
