Governor’s Bodyguard Arrested After Woman Is Shot Dead

Police have arrested Police Constable Nathan Kirwa, a GSU officer and bodyguard to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, over the shooting of a 45-year-old woman in Eldoret.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, August 30, 2026, after Kirwa allegedly argued with the woman, identified as Doris Murei Nandi, at a GSU mess compound near Eldoret State Lodge.

According to police, the shooting occurred at around 5:00 p.m. while Nandi was at the mess compound. The argument quickly escalated, prompting Kirwa to allegedly fire his rifle and shoot Nandi several times.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani said Kirwa shot Nandi five times in the back and once at the back of her head.

“He shot her five times in the back and once at the back of the head. The good thing is that we found the suspect. He is now with us, we are continuing with investigations, and tomorrow we will take him to court,” Sicharani said.

Kirwa Arrested as Police Investigate Shooting

After the shooting, Kirwa reportedly fled the scene; police later tracked him down, arrested him and disarmed him as detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.

At the scene, investigators recovered seven spent 9mm cartridges, a rifle holster and a Toyota Corolla 110 believed to belong to Kirwa.

Police also recovered a Jericho pistol loaded with five rounds of ammunition after arresting Kirwa. Investigators further noted an injury on his left forefinger, which they are examining as part of the probe.

Kirwa remains in police custody as detectives work to establish what led to the shooting and what happened before and after the incident.

Husband Recounts Wife’s Death

Meanwhile, Nandi’s husband, Nelson Kama, said he learnt that his wife had been shot near State Lodge by a person he was told was a police officer.

“She was shot near State Lodge in Eldoret by someone who, I heard, is a police officer,” Kama said.

He added that the incident had left their children deeply traumatized, with some travelling from Nairobi and Masingo after receiving the news.

“Most of my children, some of them are in Nairobi, and the one who is in Maseno. I don’t know what to say about it because they are on the way and they are so traumatized,” he said.

Meanwhile, family member Barnabas Murei raised concerns that the case could be interfered with, calling on the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to handle the matter independently.

“We are afraid that perhaps this case could be interfered with, so we do not want to see county government officials coming here. We want to leave the police to do their work, let the DCI do their work, and let justice be served for the family,” Murei said.

Body Taken to Eldoret Hospital Mortuary

Following the shooting, authorities transferred Nandi’s body to the Eldoret Hospital Mortuary. A postmortem examination is expected to provide further information as investigators continue the probe.

Police have kept Kirwa in custody as they investigate the shooting. He is expected to appear in court as the investigation progresses.
