Kenya Airways Warns of Possible Flight Delays as It Clears Backlog After Strike

Kenya Airways has warned passengers of possible delays as it works to clear a backlog of flights following the call-off of the air traffic control workers’ strike.

In a notice dated September 1, Kenya Airways said its teams are working to restore affected flight schedules and expect to resume normal scheduled operations by Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

” Following the Air Traffic Control workers’ strike call-off this morning, our teams have been proactively working through the flight backlog to restore normal operations. Customers should expect some delays as our teams restore flight schedules. We anticipate resuming our normal scheduled operations by Wednesday, 2nd September 2026.

Kenya Airways Gives Passengers New Travel Update

The airline said affected customers will receive flight status notifications directly through SMS, WhatsApp and email using the contact details provided to Kenya Airways.

Passengers have also been encouraged to visit the Kenya Airways website or use the KQ mobile app to check their flight status.

Additionally, Kenya Airways said customers who need to update their contact information can do so through the Manage Booking option.

It also noted that the affected customers who wish to reschedule their flights can do so at no additional cost.

Strike Ends as Government, KAWU Reach Agreement

The travel update comes shortly after the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) called off its strike following an agreement with the government, airport and aviation authorities.

Earlier, the government apologised to passengers, airlines and businesses following serious disruptions to operations at JKIA.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 31, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi acknowledged the significant impact of the disruption on passengers, airlines, businesses and Kenya’s international connectivity.

He added that the government’s immediate priority was to facilitate the safe and orderly restoration of normal airport operations while pursuing a lasting solution to the issues under discussion.
