Ministry of Water Opens Applications for 65 Internship Positions

The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation has opened applications for 65 internship positions under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HOAGW4RP).

In a statement dated September 1, the ministry said the second cohort of interns is expected to begin the 12-month programme in January 2027, targeting young graduates seeking to gain practical experience in their areas of specialisation.

The programme is being supported through funding from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank and is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen groundwater management and build capacity in the sector.

According to the Ministry of Water, the programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world work by placing graduates in practical work environments.

The ministry said interns will be deployed to different agencies and counties implementing the HOAGW4RP, where they will have an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and gain practical skills.

They may also participate in field assignments linked to project activities in the five counties targeted by the project.

The internship programme is open to graduates aged 25 to 35 years who hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution of higher education.

Applicants must have graduated not more than two years before the date of the advertisement.

Ministry of Water said interested graduates must also not have benefited from another internship programme funded by the Government of Kenya and must not have had formal employment in their area of specialisation after graduation.

Courses Eligible for the Internship

The Ministry of Water is seeking graduates from a range of academic disciplines, particularly those related to water, environmental management, technology and other relevant fields.

Eligible areas include:

• Geology
• Hydrogeology
• Environmental Science
• Natural Resources Management
• Civil Engineering (Water option)
• Sociology and Gender Development Studies
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS)
• ICT and Communication
• Data Science
• Chemistry
• Hydrometeorology or Climate Analysis
• Hydrology
• Economics
• Finance
• Other water-related engineering courses

Duties and Responsibilities

Successful interns will be expected to complete tasks assigned by their supervisors and mentors while documenting the skills they acquire during the programme.

They will also participate in mentorship activities, comply with quarterly monitoring and evaluation requirements, and follow the rules and regulations of the institutions where they are deployed.

The interns must be prepared to work at any relevant office or workstation within institutions implementing the HOAGW4RP where an internship vacancy is available.

Interns will also be expected to maintain confidentiality, safeguard equipment and information entrusted to them, and obtain clearance from the relevant authority before leaving their internship station.

The internship will run for 12 months and will not be renewable. Interns will receive a monthly stipend in line with the applicable government guidelines, policies and circulars governing public service internship programmes.

Those who complete the internship will be issued with certificates.

The ministry further noted that the internship may, however, be discontinued in cases of gross or disorderly conduct, unsatisfactory performance or commission of a criminal offence.

How to Apply

Interested applicants are required to submit the official internship programme application form, cover letter, copy of their ID card, CV, relevant certificates and other supporting documents.

Applications should be sent via email to hoa@rcgw.go.ke using the subject heading “APPLICATION FOR THE HOAGWARP INTERNSHIP 2027” on or before September 18, 2026.

Successful candidates will subsequently be required to provide proof of a valid Personal Accident Insurance Cover for the internship period, a Certificate of Good Conduct, a copy of their KRA PIN certificate, and bank account details.

The ministry said selection will be based on merit and candidates’ performance during interviews.

While the programme is open to all eligible graduates, women and persons living with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply.
