How a Banker Lured His Ex-Lover to a Secluded Spot Before Stabbing Her 3 Times

A Mombasa-based banker, Hannington Muthoka, has been convicted of attempted murder after a court found him guilty of stabbing his former lover, Elizabeth Shigari Bana, three times.

Elizabeth Bana, a teacher at Changamwe Secondary School, had met Muthoka while conducting banking business at the KCB Changamwe branch, where he worked.

Reports state that Muthoka was convicted on September 28, after the court heard that Elizabeth was left with a knife blade lodged in her back during the September 25, 2023 incident.

She also suffered serious injuries, including a collapsed left lung, and underwent emergency surgery at Aga Khan Hospital to have the blade removed.

Prosecution Recounts Events Leading to Hannington Muthoka Stabbing on Bana

According to the prosecution, Muthoka asked to meet Bana to discuss their relationship and attempted to persuade her to reconcile with him.

The two had earlier met at a club in Bamburi, where Muthoka allegedly reminded her of their past relationship and asked her to get back together with him.

However, Bana declined and later asked to be dropped off at her home in Mikindani, but Muthoka instead drove her to a secluded area in Bahati, Port Reitz where he allegedly demanded sex.

When she refused and got out of the vehicle, running while screaming, Muthoka chased her and stabbed her three times in the back.

The court heard that one of the stab wounds penetrated her left lung, causing it to collapse.

She was taken to Aga Khan Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery to remove the knife blade.

A clinical officer who assessed her injuries classified them as maim.

Following the prosecution, the Principal Prosecution Counsel Barbara Sombo called 10 witnesses during the trial, including witnesses who testified about the events surrounding the stabbing.

The prosecution also presented forensic evidence which matched DNA found on the weapon to Bana.

Court Rejects Muthoka’s Defence After Hearing Witness Testimony

During the proceedings, two men who were nearby told the court that they saw Muthoka and Bana struggling before Muthoka entered his vehicle and drove away.

The two said they found her bleeding with a knife lodged in her back and rushed her to hospital. According to their testimony, Bana told them that her former boyfriend had stabbed her.

Meanwhile, Muthoka denied intentionally stabbing Bana and presented WhatsApp messages, M-Pesa receipts, photographs and travel visas as part of his defence.

He used the records to argue that the two were still in a relationship at the time of the incident and had not separated.

Muthoka also presented photographs and travel documents from a trip the two had taken to Dubai, arguing that they showed they remained closely involved.

He argued that the stabbing had been accidental and occurred when Bana allegedly pulled a knife from her shopping bag and he attempted to disarm her.

However, Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo rejected Muthoka’s explanation and noted that the court had found that evidence of the three deep stab wounds, including the injury that collapsed Bana’s lung, was inconsistent with his account of an accidental struggle.

Therefore,the nature of the injuries demonstrated the intention required for the attempted murder conviction, despite his argument that the two were still in a relationship.

He was then found guilty of attempted murder and is scheduled to appear before the court for sentencing on October 12, 2026.
