Starting a business in Kenya begins with proper registration, a process that is now fully digital through the eCitizen platform.

Before the application process, entrepreneurs are advised to prepare the required documents to understand the type of business structure they want to register and ensure they have the required key documents.

Therefore, applicants must have a clear copy of their national identification or passport for foreigners to confirm their identity.

A Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN is also mandatory for all business registrations and a recent passport-sized photograph, depending on the type of registration.

Steps to Help in Registering a Business in Kenya

To register a business, the following steps are to ensure a smooth and complete process:

Step 1: Choice of Business Structure

This is the first step where entrepreneurs decide on their type of business structure, depending on their needs.

It helps to determine how your business is structured, taxed, and even how it operates.

Step 2: Log in to the eCitizen Portal

After choosing the business structure, one is required to log in to the eCitizen platform at www.ecitizen.go.ke and navigate to the Business Registration Service (BRS) section, where they can reserve a business name, complete registration forms, and track application progress.

Step 3: Search and Reserve a Business Name

Entrepreneurs are then required to enter their preferred business name into the system and check its availability.

If the name is taken, alternatives must be considered by adding unique identifiers or modifying the original idea.

Meanwhile, once a suitable name is found, it is reserved through the system, typically for 30 days after approval to allow applicants enough time to complete the registration process.

Step 4: Complete Registration Forms

During this step, one is required to fill in personal details as they appear on official identification documents and provide a valid KRA PIN.

They are also required to submit a physical business address and upload supporting documents, including identification and passport photos.

However, for PLCs, director and shareholder details must also be included.

Step 5: Payment for Business Name Registration Fees

In addition, a business person will then pay the registration fee through M-Pesa via the eCitizen portal, depending on the type of their business, and retain payment receipts for reference.

For a business name registration costs Ksh 950, while Private Limited Companies (PLCs) cost Ksh 10,750.

Step 6: Download Your Certificate

Once the application is processed, applicants are then notified via email or SMS and can download their certificates directly from the eCitizen account, print them, and use them as official proof of registration.
