Motor vehicle ownership transfer in Kenya is done online through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) system.

Before starting the transfer process, ensure you have:

- National ID or Passport of both buyer and seller
- KRA PIN certificates of both parties
- Active NTSA/TIMS accounts
- Sale agreement (recommended for record purposes)
- Access to eCitizen and NTSA services online

- Navigate to Vehicle Registration.
- Select Transfer Vehicle or Apply for Transfer of Ownership.
- Choose the vehicle to be transferred.
- Enter the buyer’s ID number and other required details.
- Select the ownership category (individual, joint ownership, company, financier, etc.).

Step 2:Motor Vehicle Buyer Accepts the Transfer

Step 3: NTSA Verification
After both parties complete their sections:
- NTSA reviews the application.
- The vehicle records are updated once approval is granted.
- Processing usually takes about 3 to 5 working days if all documents are in order.
Receiving the New Logbook
NTSA introduced the eLogbook system in 2026. After approval, the new owner receives a digital Certificate of Registration (eLogbook) through their eCitizen account instead of waiting for a physical logbook.
How to Check Transfer Status

Special Cases
Vehicles Belonging to Deceased Persons
A normal transfer cannot be used. NTSA requires an alternative transfer process supported by succession documents such as:
- Certificate of Grant
- Death Certificate
- Schedule of Assets
- Letter appointing administrators
- Original logbook or police abstract
- Form C and other supporting documents
Auctioned or Repossessed Vehicles
Vehicles bought through auctions, repossessions, court orders, or tenders must follow NTSA’s special “forced transfer” procedure and provide additional documentation proving the sale was lawful.
Important Tips
- Verify vehicle details before accepting the transfer.
- Ensure the seller’s name matches the registered owner.
- Keep copies of payment receipts and sale agreements.
- Do not use brokers or unauthorized agents.
- Complete the transfer immediately after purchase to avoid future liability issues.
NTSA fees may change from time to time, so always confirm the current charges on the official NTSA portal before making payments.
