Toxic Relationship Pushes Kenyan Woman Relocate to Canada

A Kenyan woman has opened up about the painful, toxic relationship that pushed her to leave Kenya and start a new life in Canada.

She revealed that moving abroad was not initially driven by job opportunities or education. Instead, she said a toxic relationship left her emotionally drained and forced her to make a life-changing decision.

The woman said she was deeply in love and kept returning to the relationship despite repeated heartbreak and what she described as endless “character development”.

“Ever been in that relationship that almost took you to a mental institution? Yaani yenye watu wenu hawawezi kusaidia sababu you are so stupid to be helped, that one. That made me move.”

She said she loved her former partner deeply and continued returning to him despite the heartbreak.

“Nothing could not be done to me and I kept going back. I loved that one with all my bones.”

I Would Have Ended up at Mathare’

The relationship eventually reached a point where she felt she was losing herself.

She said her former partner would often give her the silent treatment, sometimes disappearing for months.

During those periods, she admitted that she would repeatedly call and send messages while trying to find him.

“You see how partners do silent treatment to punish you; my X was professional in that. I would always look for him.”

She said she eventually reached a point where she feared she would keep returning to the same relationship if she remained in Kenya.

“Ikafika mahali nikaona kama sitatoka Kenya nitaishi kurudi na nitapelekwa Mathare.”

That was when she decided to leave not only the relationship but also the country.

Toxic Relationship Pushed her to Plan Move for Over a Year

The woman revealed that she planned her move to Canada for more than a year.

After her former partner disappeared for months, she said she eventually stopped looking for him and focused on something constructive.

She began preparing to move to Canada.

“Instead of continuing to look for them, I got busy doing something constructive. I started processing my move to Canada.”

Months later, she said her former partner returned, only to find that she had already moved on with her life.

“Alienda silent for too long, akirudi akakuta nimeshabadilisha country, timezone na accent.”

She said moving abroad helped save her from herself and gave her the fresh start she needed.

“Moving saved me from myself bana.”

How She Moved to Canada

The woman said her research eventually led her to Canada, where she hoped to start afresh.

She explored different pathways but realised that most of them required significant financial resources.

She then began building her bank statement and saving money as she prepared for the visa application.

She explained that she would sometimes borrow money from her mother, deposit it into her account and later return it when her mother needed it.

According to her, her account recorded transactions of more than Ksh5 million within six months, although the amount remaining in the account was less than Ksh1 million.

She eventually applied for a visa, explaining that her initial plan was to visit Canada before pursuing further opportunities there.

The application process involved researching the requirements and collecting the necessary documents.

She submitted her application in November 2025. By January 2026, both her visa and her child’s visa had been approved.

She recalled the excitement she felt after receiving the passport request.

The woman said her story did not end with her move to Canada, promising to share more details about how she eventually moved from relocating to Canada to becoming a citizen.

Kenyans React to Her Story

Her story sparked reactions from social media users, with some sharing their own experiences and perspectives on toxic relationships.

Steve said he had witnessed a woman return to an abusive relationship despite suffering serious injuries.

“We saved a lady from some of the most premium beatings I’ve ever seen, rushed to Nairobi Women’s Hospital, broken hand, nose, dislocated jaw, and bruised all over. Tell me why this mama, three weeks later, had dropped the case and was back.”

Daniel argued that people should not feel trapped in relationships.

“Marriage is not a yoke that should tether someone’s life. You have exit doors without locks all round. It’s easier than a fire exit door!”

Aksam described her story as inspiring.

Shemido said love can sometimes push people to make unexpected decisions.

“Mapenzi inezafanya uhame kabisa, it’s true.”
