CS Ruku Explains Why He Wants to ‘Split’ the Mt. Kenya Region

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has defended his recent remarks on Mt. Kenya politics, saying he is not seeking to divide the region.

Speaking during an interview, Ruku dismissed claims that he wants to split the Mt. Kenya region, saying that he aimed at addressing differences in development and politics.

“I’m not splitting the mountain. I’m just saying the truth, how things are, as far as the Mt. Kenya region is concerned,” Ruku said.

According to Ruku, the communities across the Mt. Kenya region have worked together in the past, including Kenya’s struggle for independence under different governments.

Development In Mt. Kenya

He, however, argued that development has not been evenly distributed across the region. He claimed that counties in Mt. Kenya West are more established.

Additionally, he noted how the region is culturally diverse and that recognizing those differences should not be seen as divisive.

On the same note, he also stated that communities such as the Meru, Chuka, Embu, Tharaka and Kikuyu each have distinct customs, traditions and cultural identities.

“We should not be ashamed when we are talking about our culture. We are all Kenyans. Kenya is made of all this unique diversity,” he said.

Freedom Fighters

On the other hand, Ruku argued that some freedom fighters from Mt. Kenya East have not received the same level of national recognition as those from other parts of the region.

He mentioned figures such as General Kubukubu and Kivote, saying that their contributions during the fight for independence deserve greater acknowledgement.

Ruku criticised former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, saying that he is politically arrogant and has too much entitlement.

“If you listen to Gachagua speaking there is too much entitlement, he is politically arrogant. That arrogance that he has needs to stop.

Projects

Ruku also highlighted several ongoing government infrastructure projects. Among them is the planned dual carriageway that will link Makutano, Mwea, Embu, Chuka, Nkubu, Meru, and Isiolo.

According to him, the project reflects the government’s commitment to boosting development across Mt. Kenya East.

His remarks come amid the ongoing political debates over the leadership and representation in the wider Mt. Kenya region.
