KeNHA Gives New Directives to Transporters

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced temporary measures affecting transporters following a system downtime that has disrupted the issuance of exemption permits.

In a notice issued on May 27, 2026, KeNHA said the interruption had affected the processing of permits used by transporters.

This has prompted the KeNHA to introduce interim measures aimed at reducing delays and inconvenience.

According to the notice, trucks with expired permits have been granted a two-week extension for the cargo already described in the permits.

KeNHA Permit System

The extension is to remain valid until June 9, 2026.

KeNHA stated that the temporary exemption is intended to allow transporters to continue operations as efforts are made to restore the permit system.

For new permit applications, KeNHA has directed vehicle inspectors to verify vehicle dimensions, while stations have been instructed to tag vehicles and issue special release documents outlining the action to be taken.

The tags are expected to include the vehicle dimensions and charges payable.

Delays Affected Transporters

KeNHA added that the tags will be closed once transporters obtain their permits after the system resumes normal operations.

The authority also issued guidance to abnormal load applicants, directing them to send application emails to kenhapermits@kenha.co.ke for further advice after review by superintendents.

The notice comes after concerns over delays that could affect cargo movement and logistics operations across the country, especially for the transporters handling oversized and special category loads that require exemption permits before accessing certain highways.

People To Observe Notice Until KeNHA Restores System

KeNHA did not indicate the cause of the system being down or even provide a specific time for the full restoration of services.

The authority urged transporters to comply with the temporary directives as it works to address the technical challenges affecting the permit issuance system.

Stakeholders in the transport sector have been encouraged to liaise with KeNHA offices for clarification on application procedures, requirements and revised timelines following the extension notice.
