KeNHA Orders Removal of Illegal Structures Along Four Major Roads

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has given roadside traders and other occupants along four major roads 30 days to remove illegal structures and vacate road reserves.
In a public notice dated September 29, KeNHA directed affected occupants to remove their goods, structures and other encroachments from the designated road reserves before the deadline.
It said the directive aims to pave the way for planned road improvements and safety works along the affected roads.
KeNHA Names Roads Targeted for Clearance
According to the authority, the notice affects occupants along the following roads:
- Likoni–Ukunda–Lunga Lunga (A7) Road
- Kilifi–Malindi–Garsen–Witu (A7) Road
- Maili Tisa–Kitale (B14) Road
- Eldoret–Nyaru (B124) Road
KeNHA said the notice applies to illegal roadside occupants, including traders and owners of unauthorised structures situated within the road reserves.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby notifies all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and unauthorized structures, along Likoni – Ukunda – Lunga Lunga (A7) Road, Kilifi Malindi – Garsen – Witu (A7) Road, Maili Tisa – Kitale (B14) Road, and Eldoret-Nyaru (B124) Road to remove their structures and vacate the road reserves,” KeNHA stated.

In addition, the Authority said the affected occupants have 30 days from the date of the notice to remove their structures and goods. The deadline is Thursday, October 29, 2026.
KeNHA warned that it will remove any structures, goods or other encroachments that remain within the affected road reserves after the deadline without further reference to the owners.
The Authority further stated that it will carry out the removals at the owners’ cost in accordance with the laws and regulations governing the protection and management of road reserves.
“Upon the expiry of the 30 days – Thursday, October 29, 2026 – any structures, or goods, remaining within the said section of the road reserves shall be removed without further reference to the owners, in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations governing the protection and management of the road reserves, at the cost of the owner,” KeNHA stated.
Road Projects to Improve Safety and Traffic Flow
KeNHA said the directive will facilitate planned service road improvements, construction of bus bays and drainage rehabilitation works along the listed roads.

The projects form part of ongoing performance-based maintenance and safety enhancement works that the Authority said will improve road safety, visibility and traffic flow.
Meanwhile, the Authority reminded affected occupants that Kenyan law prohibits the illegal occupation of road reserves. It cited the Kenya Roads Act, 2007, and the Traffic Act, Cap. 403.
“Illegal Occupation of the Road Reserves is an offence under the Kenyan Laws (Kenya Roads Act, 2007, and the Traffic Act Cap 403,”
KeNHA urged all affected occupants to comply with the notice and clear the road reserves within the stipulated period.
