KURA Announces Partial Road Closures Across Nairobi for Major Road Works

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has invited bids for the construction of roads in Wajir Town as part of a multi-billion-shilling infrastructure project aimed at improving mobility, road safety, and economic development in the region.

In a tender notice dated June 16, 2026, KURA announced an international competitive bidding process for the construction of urban roads in Wajir as part of the Development of Urban Roads in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas (ASALs) Project.

“The Government of the Republic of Kenya has received financing from the DPEC Fund for International Development (the OPEC Fund) towards the cost of the Development of Urban Ronde in Arid and Semi-Arid Area (ASALE) Project and intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the contract for the Construction of Wajir Town Roads,” read part of the notice.

The project is financed by the OPEC Fund for International Development and is estimated to cost approximately USD 35 million, which is about Ksh 4.5 billion.

KURA Invites Bids for Billion Wajir Roads Project

According to KURA, the project will involve upgrading 31 roads within Wajir Town to bitumen standards.

The roads, which cover approximately 66 KM, have been divided into three separate lots for construction purposes.

Interested contractors may submit bids for one, two, or all three lots. However, successful bidders will only be eligible for the award of a maximum of two lots.

“Bidders shall have the option of submitting bids for one (1), two (2), or all three (3) Lobs but shall only be awarded a maximum of two (2) Lobs in this tender,” read part of the notice.

KURA said the road upgrades are intended to enhance accessibility, improve road safety, and support economic growth in the town.

The authority further stated that procurement will be conducted through International Competitive Bidding (ICB) procedures in line with the OPEC Fund’s procurement guidelines.

How to Apply

The tender process will also draw from internationally recognised procurement standards and Kenya’s Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015, to ensure transparency, fairness, efficiency, and value for money.

Interested firms can obtain bidding documents from KURA upon payment of a non-refundable fee of Ksh5,000.

In addition, KURA revealed that bidders will be required to provide a bid security in the form of an unconditional bank guarantee issued by a bank regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya, which has been set at Ksh 30 million for each lot.

The authority also noted that all bids must remain valid for 210 days from the date of tender opening.

Additionally, KURA has scheduled a mandatory pre-tender site visit for interested bidders on July 7, 2026, in Wajir.

Completed bids must be submitted to the authority’s Supply Chain Management Office in Nairobi on or before August 6, 2026.

The authority warned that late submissions will be rejected and noted that any form of canvassing will lead to automatic disqualification.
