Kenya Met Lists Areas to Receive Heavy Rainfall in Second Week of May

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a warning regarding heavy rainfall expected in various regions of the country during the second week of May.

In its seven-day forecast covering May 5 and May 11, 2026, Kenya Met said rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, some parts of the Coast, the Southeastern Lowlands, and Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

According to the weatherman, heavy rainfall events may occur in some parts of Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Coast.

At the same time, daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in the Coast, the Southeastern lowlands, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya.

Night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be below 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and the vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Kenya Met Weather Outlook for Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin

In the regions of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, sunny intervals are expected in the mornings, though rains may occur in a few places.

Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places occasionally spreading to several places.

Counties expected to be affected in these regions include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.

In Northwestern Kenya, which comprises Turkana and Samburu counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night. However, morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers may occur over a few places.

Nairobi and its Environs

For the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and its environs, mornings are likely to be cloudy, with occasional rains over a few places, giving way to sunny intervals.

Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places occasionally spreading to several places.

Other counties in this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Northeastern, Southeastern Lowlands and Coast Regions

Elsewhere, in Northeastern Kenya, comprising Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night.

However, morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers may occur over a few places.

In the Southeastern lowlands, which include Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night.

For the Coast region, which comprises Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties, as well as the Tana Delta, morning, afternoon, and night showers are likely to occur over a few places.
