KPC Foundation Expands Clean Energy Programme to Mukuru Viwandani Households

The Kenya Pipeline Company PLC (KPC PLC) Foundation has expanded its Clean Energy Transition Programme to the Mukuru Viwandani area in Nairobi, focusing on poor households in the area by providing them with clean cooking solutions and building their resilience in case of fire accidents.
In the ongoing phase of the programme, 100 households are expected to benefit from the provision of clean cooking solutions through the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which aims to lower their dependency on fuel sources.
The project, which is the corporate social responsibility programme of KPC Foundation, is in collaboration with Vivo Energy Kenya and comes after the first phase in Jomvu Kuu area in Mombasa County, where 90 households benefited from the clean energy program.
KPC Clean Cooking Solutions to Increase the Safety of Households
In the implementation of the Mukuru Viwandani programme, the beneficiary households will be supplied with the full 6kg LPG starter kit, which includes a gas cylinder, burner, grill, and gas to promote immediate use of clean and efficient cooking.
Through the expansion, the programme will reach a total of 190 households, thus showing the commitment of KPC Foundation in implementing solutions to the environmental problems as well as improving the lives of communities.
This programme is in line with the KPC Foundation Strategic Plan 2025-2028.
Speaking during the launch, KPC Managing Director and Foundation Chair, Pius Mwendwa, said the programme demonstrates the company’s efforts to transform strategic commitments into measurable community impact.
“This initiative is a clear demonstration of how we are turning strategy into real impact. We cannot ask communities to protect the environment while they still rely on unsafe and unsustainable energy sources. Through this programme, we are providing practical solutions that improve daily life while advancing environmental conservation,” Mwendwa said.
He added that the organisation intends to expand the programme further to communities located near KPC operations across the country.
“Our goal is to scale this model across communities near KPC operations nationwide—ensuring more families access clean energy, safer homes, and better quality of life. This is how we deliver impact at scale,” he stated.
Beyond promoting clean energy adoption, the programme is also addressing fire risks commonly experienced in informal settlements by equipping residents with emergency response skills.
105 individuals from the Mukuru Viwandani settlement will be trained in firefighting through the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas, enabling them to become community fire marshals and emergency responders.

Community Resilience and Environmental Protection
KPC Foundation Manager Rachel Gathoni said combining clean energy access with safety training was essential in creating sustainable change within communities.
“This programme is about more than changing how people cook. It is about protecting families from harmful smoke, reducing fire risks, and improving the overall quality of life. When communities are given practical alternatives, real and lasting change becomes possible,” Gathoni said.
The Clean Energy Transition Programme supports KPC Foundation’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments by encouraging clean energy use, reducing reliance on charcoal and firewood, and limiting exposure to indoor air pollution.
Vivo Energy Group operates in several African countries and supplies energy products such as fuels, lubricants, and LPG, as well as develops innovative solutions for sustainable development.
KPC Foundation intends to roll out the Clean Energy Transition Programme among neighboring communities of KPC in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu.
