Lupita Nyong’o’s Incredible Journey: From Kenya to an Oscar and Hollywood Fame

Lupita Amondi Nyong’o is an award-winning Kenyan-Mexican actress, filmmaker and author who has built an international career while maintaining strong ties to Kenya.
Lupita Amondi Nyong’o was born on March 1, 1983, in Mexico City, Mexico, while her Kenyan parents lived in political exile.
Her family later returned to Kenya, and Lupita Amondi Nyong’o grew up in Nairobi from age 3. Although she was born in Mexico, her upbringing in Kenya shaped her cultural identity and connection to the country.
Lupita Amondi Nyong’o is the daughter of Anyang’ Nyong’o, a prominent Kenyan politician, academic and Governor of Kisumu County, and Dorothy Nyong’o. She grew up as the second of six children in a family that valued education, public service and creativity.
From an early age, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o developed an interest in performance. While growing up in Kenya, she took the lead role of Juliet in a school production of Romeo and Juliet, giving her an early opportunity to explore acting.
However, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o initially gained experience behind the camera. While studying in the United States, she worked as a production assistant on The Constant Gardener (2005). During the production, she met actor Ralph Fiennes, whose advice encouraged her to consider acting seriously.
Education and Acting Training
Lupita studied Film and Theatre Studies at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2003.
After completing her undergraduate education, Lupita returned to Kenya and worked on local creative projects. She later pursued professional acting training at the Yale School of Drama in Connecticut.
In 2012, she graduated from Yale with a Master of Fine Arts in Acting and during her time there, she performed in productions including The Winter’s Tale. She received the Herschel Williams Prize for outstanding acting ability.
“I love filmmaking, but I decided to go to drama school because I thought that when I’m 60 and looking back on my life, if acting hadn’t been a part of it, I would hate myself,” Lupita said, explaining why she chose formal acting training.
Before Hollywood recognized her talent, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o established herself as a filmmaker and television actress in Kenya.
In 2009, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o directed, produced and edited In My Genes, a documentary that followed Kenyans living with albinism and explored discrimination against them.
She also appeared in the Kenyan television series Shuga, which addressed relationships, HIV awareness and sexual health among young people.
These projects strengthened her storytelling skills and prepared her for the international opportunities that followed.

Breakthrough in 12 Years a Slave
Lupita’s career changed dramatically when she played Patsey in Steve McQueen’s historical drama 12 Years a Slave (2013).
The film follows Solomon Northup, a free Black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Lupita portrayed Patsey, an enslaved young woman who befriends Northup while enduring brutal treatment on a Louisiana plantation.
Her performance earned widespread attention and in 2014, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming an Oscar winner after her first major feature-film role.
“When we started this film [12 Years a Slave], I knew we were embarking on something that would make a huge difference,” She said reflecting on the film.
Following her Oscar win, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o quickly expanded her film career. She appeared in Non-Stop (2014) before joining the Star Wars franchise as Maz Kanata in Star Wars
Meanwhile, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o starred in Queen of Katwe (2016) and voiced Raksha in The Jungle Book (2016).
Her profile grew even further in 2018 when Lupita Amondi Nyong’o portrayed Nakia in Marvel’s Black Panther. The film became a global box-office success and a major cultural moment. She later returned as Nakia in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).

Us, Stage and Recent Roles
In 2019, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o demonstrated her versatility in Jordan Peele’s horror film Us. She played Adelaide Wilson and her sinister doppelgänger, Red, earning widespread critical attention.
She also starred in Little Monsters (2019) and continued her work on stage and in voice acting. Her performance in Eclipsed earned Lupita a Tony Award nomination in 2016.
Later, she voiced Roz in The Wild Robot (2024) and starred as Samira in A Quiet Place: Day One (2024).
In 2026, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o joined Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey, based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem. She plays Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra in the star-studded production.
Her casting attracted racist criticism online. However, during a May 2026 interview with Elle, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o responded.
“This is a mythological story. I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not,” she said.

Relationships and Personal Life
Lupita Nyong’o has generally kept her romantic life private and has never been married. She previously dated Somali-Canadian rapper K’naan from 2013 to 2014 and later had a relationship with television host and sports commentator Selema Masekela from 2022 to 2023.
She later became romantically involved with actor Joshua Jackson, the pair had known each other for years before reconnecting at a Janelle Monáe concert in October 2023. They confirmed their relationship later that year before separating in 2024.
Beyond acting, Lupita Amondi Nyong’o has established herself as a fashion and beauty figure. She has appeared on major magazine covers, including Vogue, and became a global ambassador for Lancôme.
As of July 2026, Celebrity Net Worth estimated Lupita Amondi Nyong’o’s net worth at $10 million, although celebrity wealth estimates are not independently audited figures.
