She Called Her Late Husband a “Deadbeat” at His Grave, See What Happened One Year Later

A Kenyan woman has opened up about the pain she faced after a post she shared at her late husband’s grave sparked harsh reactions online.

Ghashel Mbugua revisited the emotional moment on August 6, 2026, exactly one year after a photo of her standing beside her husband’s grave went viral on social media.

In the photo, Mbugua stood beside the grave with a message expressing regret over choosing him as the father of her children.

The post attracted widespread attention and drew strong reactions from social media users.

Mbugua Revisits Painful Deadbeat Husband Post

Sharing the photo on Facebook, Mbugua said her name was all over social media on August 6, 2025, after the post went viral.

She said the image appeared on platforms and pages including Tuko.co.ke, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls PHOENIX, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok.

According to her, many people insulted her and accused her of being responsible for her husband’s death.

“Many insulted me; in fact, comments mob kila mahali zilikuwa za matusi, many saying umemuuwa,” she wrote.

She said some people also told her to go ahead with the lifestyle they believed she wanted.

However, Mbugua said few people understood the pain she was experiencing when she shared the photo.

“But akuna mtu aliwai jua ile uchungu nlikuwa nayo that time nkipost ivi,” she said.

The mother said she later found the photo in her memories one year after it was taken.

She Responds to People Who Wished Her Death

Mbugua also addressed people who had wished her death following the controversial post.

“To those who wished me death as well, God has been faithful sijakufa,” she said.

Despite surviving the intense online criticism, she admitted that the memories still hurt.

“But it pains,” she added.

Her post prompted a fresh conversation among her followers, with several women sharing their own experiences with relationships, marriage and absent fathers.

Faith Muriuki responded to the discussion by saying she had come across a similar statement before.

“Another person said I will be happy for others until it’s my turn and I agreed with her,” Muriuki wrote.

Setu Mwash said people who had never dealt with a deadbeat father might struggle to understand the situation.

“Kama mtu hana deadbeat huwezi elewa.”

Mary Wangui wrote, “I’ll clap for others until it’s my time, mungu fagia deadbeat woooote 🙄.”

Some Followers Questioned the Decision to Attend the Burial

Caro Beibz reacted to Mbugua’s decision to attend the burial despite their apparent difficult history.

“Heri wewe ata ulienda kumzika juu mi singeenda.”

Mercy Obara suggested that the circumstances behind Mbugua’s grave-side photo may have been misunderstood by those who saw it online.

“Watu wa huyo bwana wangejua reason yako yakupiga picha kwa kaburi wangekutoa mbio na panga,” she wrote.

Mum Giselle wrote, “I don’t wish him death but may he never find peace.”

Djkaris asked Mbugua to explain what had happened between her and the deceased.

“Ni nini hio alikufanyia ukamchukia vile.”

Esther Magu wrote, “Kusema tu ukweli mimi sijawai ombea bwanangu akufe, heri kuachana roho safi.”

Mbugua Opens Up About Their Marriage

In a separate post, Mbugua asked her followers to give their honest opinions about marriages involving very young couples.

“Guys, today am serious mnijibu,” she wrote.

She asked whether a marriage involving one person aged 19 and another aged 21 could survive.

“Marriage ya mtu mmoja 19 years, na huyo mwingine 21 years ingedumu kweli?” she asked.

Mbugua also wanted to know whether marriages between people who marry at a young age can survive in the long term.

“Are there marriages that have survived after watu wameowana wakiwa wadogo?” she asked.

She then revealed that she and her late husband started their relationship before getting married.

According to her, they dated for three years before getting married immediately after completing school.

She said their marriage lasted six years before it ended on a Saturday morning.

“My baby daddy and I got married immediately after school. The marriage survived for only 6 years alafu ikaisha one of a Saturday morning,” she wrote.

Mbugua added that their three-year relationship before marriage meant they had been together for nine years in total.

“Before niolewe, we had dated for 3 years, so relationship yetu iliisha after being together for 9 good years,” she said.
