Popular Gen Z activist Ezekiel Kyama, popularly known as “Mr Speaker Sir”, has reportedly been arrested in Nairobi Central Business District and is currently being held at Central Police Station.
Kyama’s reported arrest comes amid ongoing anniversary-related operations linked to the historic anti-Finance Bill protests that shook the country two years ago.
The activist, who gained national attention after entering Parliament grounds during the demonstrations, is among several youths reportedly detained during the latest crackdown.
According to reports, Mr Speaker Sir had recently resurfaced after spending time in hiding and had been operating under legal representation from Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The activist became widely known in 2024 after a video circulated showing him addressing Parliament during the protests that saw young Kenyans mobilise against the Finance Bill.
In the footage, Kyama could be heard saying: “Mr. Speaker sir, I am here to address you, you must go, Ruto must go.”
Mr Speaker Sir Arrest Follows Renewed Protest Activity
During the same address, Kyama continued with a defiant message as crowds gathered around Parliament, as protesters expressed their anger during the 2024 demonstrations.
“Tuko hapa na hatuendi, tunalala huku, we don’t fear you guys. You are hypocrites. We don’t fear you,” Kyama uttered inside Parliament.
“Mr. Speaker, we don’t fear you. Tuko ndani, we stormed inside,” ‘Mr. Speaker sir’ added.
The latest reported detention has brought back memories of the dramatic scenes witnessed during the Finance Bill protests, where young activists occupied key areas in Nairobi and demanded changes from the government.
After his reported arrest, Kyama was heard speaking from Central Police Station, where he indicated that several other protesters were also being held.
“Tumeshikwa tuko Central Police Station, na tuko wasee wengi sana,” Mr Speaker Sir said.

Protesters Seek Help From Babu Owino
In the background of the recording, another arrested protester could be heard calling for assistance from Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
“Babu Owino tunakuhitaji,” one of the detainees was heard saying in a video seen by hivileo.co.ke.
The statement appeared to be a direct appeal to the legislator, who has previously offered legal support to some young activists facing arrest during demonstrations.
The circumstances surrounding Kyama’s arrest, including the exact allegations against him and the number of people detained alongside him, remain unclear.
