Human rights activist and outspoken critic of the government, Boniface Mwangi, is currently facing public attention due to allegations that he fled the country ahead of a protest against the Finance Bill, which was supposed to take place on June 25.

Boniface Mwangi has been among the leading figures to call for participation of Kenyan citizens in peaceful protests against the introduction of the Finance Bill, his contribution being evident through the messages he posts on social media.

It has been alleged that Mwangi left for Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday, June 21 via Lufthansa Airlines flight LH 591 at 9:42pm together with his family.

Criticism Over Activist Boniface Mwangi Absence

X user @Belive_Kinuthia accused Mwangi of urging Kenyans to take to the streets while travelling abroad.

“Boniface Mwangi has been one of the loudest voices urging people to take to the streets on Thursday,” the user wrote in a post.

“Interestingly, while the victims of his incitement prepare to face the police on Thursday, Boniface boarded Lufthansa Flight LH 591 at 2142 hours yesterday and headed to Germany with his family for a holiday,” Kinuthia further claimed.

“Quite the strategy: encourage mass action at home, then watch events unfold from the comfort and safety of Europe,” he added.

Another X user, @abuga_makori, also criticised Mwangi, saying, “Dear Kenyans, avoid Boniface Mwangi and his fellow commercial activists. As we speak, Boniface Mwangi departed to FRANKFURT, GERMANY on Sunday, 21st June, 2026 at 2142 hours aboard Lufthansa Airlines flight number LH 591.”

@abuga_makori alleged that Mwangi was travelling to meet organisations abroad.

“He is going to meet NGOs, make money while you run in streets without cause!” Makori added.

“People like Boniface Mwangi would be in jail in advanced democracies for threatening sovereignty of the people. June 25th should never be the platform for anarchists to cause chaos,” Abuga Makori stated.

Debate Around Protests And Activism

Another X user, @Mwendiajnr, questioned why Mwangi was encouraging youth participation while reportedly outside the country.

“Why is Boniface Mwangi inciting the youth to protest while he is comfortably in Germany?” the user asked.

“Bonnie left the country yesterday for Frankfurt, Germany. He will not be part of the demonstration he is urging young people to join,” Mwendia added.

The criticism comes as authorities and various groups continue to monitor preparations for June 25 demonstrations.

Previous anti-Finance Bill protests in Kenya have drawn large crowds, security responses, and international attention.

Supporters of protests have maintained that citizens have a constitutional right to peaceful demonstrations, while critics have warned against activities that could lead to disruption, violence, or economic losses.
