The Public Service Commission (PSC) has raised concerns over increasing cases of abuse targeting interns under the Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP).
The Commission warned public officers against mistreating interns and urged them to create safe and respectful workplaces during a capacity-building workshop held in Naivasha on May 25, 2026.
PSC Chairperson Francis Meja said mentors and coaches must take full responsibility for guiding and protecting interns placed under their supervision.
“As mentors and coaches, you are the first line of defence. You are obligated to create safe, respectful, and dignified environments for every intern,” said Meja.
He warned that any form of abuse is unacceptable.
“Any form of abuse, whether physical, emotional, or sexual, is not only a betrayal of public trust but also a criminal offence,” he added.
PSIP Growth and Impact
Meja also highlighted the programme’s progress, noting that it has now benefited 37,504 graduates since its launch in 2019.
He said the programme has helped many young people gain experience and transition into employment.
“Since its launch in 2019, the programme has grown into a flagship government initiative,” he said.
He added that 3,137 PSIP alumni have already secured jobs in Ministries, Departments and Agencies, County Governments, and the private sector.

PSC Call for Stronger Mentorship
PSC Secretary/CEO Paul Famba called on mentors to take an active role in shaping interns’ careers through guidance and support.
“Every intern placed in your respective institutions is waiting for someone to believe in them, guide them, and protect them,” he said.
He added that strong mentorship can determine a young person’s future success.
