President William Ruto’s Administration picked Wajir County as the venue for the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations following the realization of the strategy adopted by the government to balance regional development and promote development in Northern Kenya.

According to a statement released on May 31, 2026, by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, holding of the country’s 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir highlights the Kenya Kwanza government’s commitment to promoting balanced national development.

As highlighted by the government, the celebration is expected to go down in history as the first time the Madaraka Day celebrations will be held in Wajir County.

The step, which the government said is intended to bring all regions on board in the country’s development process, highlights the tremendous changes being witnessed in the North-Eastern region.

Massive Development Projects Leading to the Selection of Wajir

The government noted that the decision to choose Wajir for this year’s celebration has been made on account of the numerous development projects being undertaken in the area.

“The selection of Wajir County as the venue for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations demonstrates the government’s determination to bridge regional imbalances and ensure national balanced growth,” Mwaura said.

Investments taking place in the county include the construction of a new stadium capable of holding more than 10,000 people.

It will be used not only for this year’s national celebrations but also in the future.

Other developments include the building of tarred roads that will link the stadium to the neighboring areas.

Street lighting and other related amenities have also been installed, along with a Mini State Lodge in Wajir Town.

Thirty Major Projects Underway Across North Eastern

Beyond Wajir, the government disclosed that a total of 30 major projects are currently being implemented across the counties of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera.

These include seven modern markets aimed at boosting trade and supporting local businesses.

The region is also benefiting from six student centres in Garissa designed to improve learning opportunities for young people.

Housing remains another key focus area, with five affordable housing projects expected to deliver a combined total of 2,148 housing units.

“Furthermore, seven road projects are enhancing regional connectivity and transport services, alongside improvements to water supply and sewer systems,” the statement said.

The government added that more than 1,000 classrooms and other educational facilities are under development across the region.

Theme for Madaraka Day and Its Importance for the Country

The theme that will guide the Madaraka Day of 2026 is “Education, Skills and the Future”.

According to Mwaura, the theme aligns with ongoing government reforms aimed at expanding access to education, improving quality, and ensuring equity within the education sector.

The spokesperson said these efforts were recently showcased during the Thematic Expo held at Wagberi Primary School, where both public and private institutions exhibited achievements in education and skills development.

“The government is steadfastly implementing comprehensive reforms aimed at expanding access, improving quality and ensuring equity in the education sector,” he said.

Celebrating Self-Rule and National Unity

Mwaura further noted that the country will be marking 63 years since attaining self-rule in 1963, after decades of colonial administration.

He described Madaraka Day as an important occasion for Kenyans to reflect on the aspirations of the nation’s founding fathers, including national unity, international development, and prosperity for all citizens.

“The Kenya Kwanza Administration reaffirms its commitment to inclusive development, national cohesion, and equitable progress, in line with these aspirations,” he said.

Mwaura urged Kenyans to participate in the celebrations, saying the event provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s political, social, and economic journey since independence while shaping a united and innovative future.

“Collectively, these developments are driving inclusive growth, skills enhancement and regional integration as part of Kenya’s broader national development agenda,” Mwaura stated.
