Gospel Star Paul Waiganjo Joins Ruto’s Government as Development Advisor

President William Ruto has officially appointed gospel musician Paul Waiganjo as his advisor on Development Affairs.

The former DCP politician joined the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) only weeks before he received the State House appointment.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rebecca Miano announced the appointment during a church service in Ol-Kalou, Nyandarua County.

Waiganjo is now charged with advising the president and the government on the development of the nation and grassroots level within the President’s Office in State House, Nairobi.

Political Defections and Suitability for Public Office

This comes days after Waiganjo parted ways with Democracy for the Citizens Party, where he served as one of its top officials, before joining UDA.

Waiganjo cited dissatisfaction with the party’s internal mechanism as his reason for leaving DCP, and poor treatment during the nominations for the Ol-Kalou parliamentary by-election, which he participated in and came in second.

He then pledged his loyalty to President Ruto and the UDA party, claiming they would provide him with better space to advance his political interests.

His appointment has ignited debate over political loyalties and public appointments.

Supporters argue that Waiganjo’s prior role in public affairs as well as the entertainment industry, has prepared him for his new government role.

“He has demonstrated leadership both in the entertainment industry and in public affairs, making him suitable for government service,” argue his proponents.

Political Realignments and Advisory Roles

Critics, however, question the timing and view the appointment as a reward for his defection.

Others have viewed it as part of the current administration’s wider scheme of integrating voices from various sectors of society.

There has been no evidence from the State House or any other authority to suggest that Waiganjo’s defection was tied to the appointment.

The move comes at a time when political realignments are happening ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In his new position, Waiganjo is expected to work closely with state agencies and relevant stakeholders in identifying and advancing socioeconomic developmental initiatives.

He will specifically advise on community-driven projects, youth empowerment, and ways to boost livelihoods across the country.
