Ruto Pays Emotional Tribute to King Harald V Following His Demise

President William Ruto has paid tribute to Norway’s King Harald V following his death, describing the late monarch as an exceptional leader whose life was marked by duty, humility and service to his people.

In a condolence message issued on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Ruto expressed sympathy to Queen Sonja, the Royal Family, the Norwegian Government and citizens following the King’s death at the age of 89.

“His Majesty King Harald V has departed, but the values he embodied and the nation he helped shape will endure,” Ruto said.

King Harald died on Friday, August 28, at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet after more than three decades on the Norwegian throne. He ascended to the throne in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V.

Ruto recalls historic Norway visit

Ruto linked his tribute to his official visit to Norway in June, which marked the first visit by a Kenyan president at head-of-state level.

During the June 8 to 9 visit, Ruto met Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and had an audience with Crown Prince Haakon.

Kenya and Norway also advanced cooperation in areas including peace and security, climate action, trade, sustainable development and ocean affairs.

Ruto said he retained warm memories of the hospitality extended to his delegation during the visit, including his engagement with Crown Prince Haakon at the Royal Palace.

He described King Harald’s reign as a period defined by national unity, constitutional duty and public service, while highlighting Norway’s role in promoting democracy, good governance, human rights, peace and international cooperation.

King Harald’s legacy

King Harald was widely regarded as a unifying figure during his 35-year reign and remained closely associated with Norway’s national identity.

Born in 1937, he spent part of his childhood in exile after Norway was invaded during the Second World War. He later became the country’s longest-serving living monarch and was known for his approachable style and commitment to public service.

His death has ushered Norway into a new chapter, with his son Crown Prince Haakon succeeding him as King Haakon VIII.

Ruto said Kenya would continue to nurture its longstanding friendship with Norway while honoring King Harald’s memory.

“May His Majesty King Harald V rest in eternal peace,” the President said.
