Political activist Shakira Wafula has publicly detailed her experience while working in former CJ David Maraga’s political campaign, alleging that concerns over sexual harassment and predatory behaviour within the team were ignored and mishandled.

In a series of posts shared on X, Shakira said the matter began on October 7, 2025, when she met with two other women from the campaign to discuss concerns they had experienced.

“I don’t know about you, but a presidency that protects potential sex offenders is not the type of presidency I would have any confidence in. Not in an age where we are screaming and crying every day about the safety of women, and where grace and opportunity were repeatedly offered to them to handle the matter,” Shakira said.

According to her, the discussion revealed that the alleged sexual harassment cases were “not an isolated case.”

“We quickly established that sexual harassment was not an isolated case,” she wrote.

Shakira said the group later added another female campaign member, who was also a lawyer, into a discussion group to deliberate on the way forward.

During the discussions, she claimed they realised the campaign lacked a safety policy to address such concerns.

She further alleged that they approached a senior member within the campaign on October 11, 2025, and informed him of the incidents during a virtual meeting.

Shakira Wafula Complaints Dismissed

According to Shakira, the official listened and promised to organise a meeting with other members holding leadership positions in the campaign.

The meeting was eventually held on October 16, 2025, where, according to Shakira, more allegations of predatory behaviour emerged.

However, she claimed the response from some officials was dismissive.

“The response we got from this meeting was that women have been through worse, and that we would be taught how to fight,” she stated.

Shakira Sidelined From Campaign

Shakira alleged that after raising the concerns, some of the complainants were sidelined from campaign activities and approached individually in what she described as attempts to “handle us separately.”

She said she later drafted an official complaint letter and also worked on a proposed code of conduct policy for the campaign.

On November 3 2025, a formal complaint together with the proposed code of conduct was submitted.

According to Shakira, the campaign later informed them that the matter would be handed over to the UGM Party, and on November 13 2025, the complainants received communication indicating that a legal process had officially begun.

Resignation

Shakira also revealed that she resigned from the campaign after concluding that the concerns raised were not being adequately addressed.

“Tolerance to the indignification and harassment of women, even in the slightest, is not something I could comfortably sit with,” she wrote.

Despite her resignation and criticism of the handling of the matter, Shakira maintained that she still held respect for the campaign leader.

“I believe CJ is one of the good ones. I hold him in very high regard and have much respect for him,” she stated.

The allegations have therefore sparked conversations online about workplace safety, accountability, and the handling of sexual harassment complaints within political organisations.
