Uproar as MP Threatens to Stop NGO’s Borehole Project Over Lack of Consultation

Uproar on social media as a member of parliament from Mwingi Central in Kitui has threatened to stop an NGO’s borehole project because they failed to consult the community and the area MP.

Speaking to the residents of Mwingi Central during a political event, Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi said that Life Water Canada, an NGO, should consult the people and him before drilling boreholes.

He warned that if the NGO continues with its projects of drilling boreholes without consultation with the people, they should stop and take their boreholes back to Canada.

“Life Water Canada, I want to tell you that this is Mwingi Central in Kitui, Kenya. We do not like corruption, and you must involve the community and the area MP. If not, take your boreholes back to Canada.

After making these remarks, the people he was addressing were clapping and ululating, which looked like they agreed with their leader.

His comments have triggered an uproar on social media, with people saying that they are shocked because the NGO is helping them and they are threatening to chase them away because of drilling boreholes.

Many netizens have circulated the video mocking the MP for making such remarks while he himself is not drilling boreholes for his own people, yet he wants to stop an NGO.

Omondi said, “A Kamba leader is in the headlines for threatening to attack Life Water Canada NGO for drilling free boreholes without involving the Mwingi Central MP. What sort of nonsense is that?”

“Just listen to those clapping; they are the voters who are solely responsible for the mess we have as a country,” Kips said.

Rakuom said, “I’m also wondering, how exactly does drilling a borehole that is going to benefit a community constitute corruption?”

“They have never liked people lifting up communities; they do the same to inspiring leaders who just want to help, in fear of the people seeing their incompetence and refusing to elect them in the next elections,” Mercy said.

George said, “Corruption everywhere. Politicians are not good people. They always want credit for doing nothing.”

“This one wants to take the credit; next thing you’ll see is big writing funded by CDF, something they contributed nothing to. To make it worse, those who need more are cheering in the background,” Franklin said.

Life Water Canada is a Canadian non-governmental organisation that supports water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects in several countries, including Kenya, Haiti, Nigeria and Liberia.

In Mwingi Central, the organization has worked with local teams to drill and rehabilitate boreholes, repair water points, construct latrines and educate communities on hygiene.

The organisation has been active in the constituency for years, with recent projects taking the number of boreholes delivered in the area to more than 100, according to local reports and updates shared during project launches.
