The United States has strengthened its domestic Ebola preparedness system and now relies on a nationwide network of specialised treatment centres developed after the 2014 outbreak in West Africa.

Washington has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to boost its ability to manage Ebola and other high-risk infectious diseases.

That funding supports a coordinated system of 13 treatment centres across the country.

“At least 10 of 13 centres ready to go,” Reuters reported after contacting hospitals and universities involved in the programme.

The facilities fall under the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center network, which prepares hospitals to respond to highly infectious disease outbreaks.

Ebola Preparedness Network Covers Major U.S. Hospitals

According to Reuters, 10 of the 13 hospitals and academic institutions confirmed they can receive patients exposed to Ebola.

Three institutions did not respond to requests for comment.

The network includes leading medical centres such as the University of Nebraska Medical Centre and Emory University in Atlanta, which has previously treated Americans exposed to infectious diseases, including hantavirus.

Other participating facilities include Bellevue Hospital in New York and Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

At the same time, officials say federal funding continues to strengthen readiness and improve national health security systems.

“The United States’ investment in preparedness remains a critical component of national health security,” said Emily Hilliard, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Against that backdrop, a separate Ebola-related quarantine proposal in Kenya continues to face legal and public resistance, with court action and protests slowing its rollout.

Kenya Quarantine Plan Faces Court Challenge and Public Opposition

In Kenya, a proposed quarantine facility at Laikipia Airbase in Nanyuki has sparked legal and public backlash.

The High Court suspended the project and required full disclosure of agreements, operational frameworks and compliance with constitutional requirements, including public participation.

That ruling followed a petition that questioned the transparency and legality of the arrangement.

The petition raised concerns over governance, sovereignty, and possible biosecurity risks linked to the facility.

Meanwhile, public demonstrations erupted around the Laikipia Air Base, where tensions escalated during protests opposing the project.

Reports indicate that at least two people died after security forces moved in to disperse the crowd.

As court proceedings continue, authorities in both countries now expect to revisit the arrangement while public pressure and policy debates intensify.
