Who Is Abdi Mohamed? Meet the Absa Bank Kenya CEO Who Has Resigned

Abdi Mohamed has resigned as the Chief Executive Officer of Absa Bank Kenya after serving at the helm for three years since May 2023.
Following his resignation, Absa Bank Kenya Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Yusuf Omari has assumed the role of interim CEO as the bank begins the search for a substantive chief executive.
Mohamed’s exit comes as parent company Absa Group has launched a Ksh31 billion offer to increase its stake in Absa Bank Kenya from 68.5 % to 85.0 %.
The share offer is scheduled to close on August 11 and is expected to strengthen the group’s ownership in its Kenyan subsidiary.

Abdi Mohamed was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Absa Bank Kenya after succeeding Jeremy Awori, who stepped down on October 31, 2022, to become CEO of Ecobank Group.

He’s an accomplished leader and senior executive in banking with over 15 years of experience in senior leadership in the industry.
Additionally, he has extensive experience in various African and European markets.
Abdi Mohamed holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) in Business Administration from Kenyatta University.
He also pursued an MBA in International Business at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, from 2006 to 2007, and later attended the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at IMD from 2019 to 2021.
Career Background
Mohamed began his banking career with Absa (then Barclays Bank Kenya) 28 years ago at the Garissa branch and has since held several senior leadership positions across the Group.
Before this, he served as the Managing Director and CEO of Absa Bank Tanzania Limited from February 2020 to May 2023, during which he successfully led the organization’s rebranding from Barclays to Absa.
In addition, Abdi Mohamed served at Barclays Bank Tanzania in May 2016 as Managing Director, during which he embarked on a four-year transformation journey that drove faster-than-market growth and superior shareholder returns.
Before holding the position of MD at Barclays Bank, he was the Chief Operating Officer at Barclays Bank Kenya from February 2012 to April 2016, providing strategic leadership to service delivery and support teams.
His earlier roles include Consumer Banking Director at Barclays, Regional Head of Islamic Banking for East and West Africa, and Retail Director at Barclays Bank Zambia, where he developed and executed strategies that significantly expanded the retail bank and achieved market leadership in Zambia.
