Safaricom Issues Update on M-PESA Service Disruption

Safaricom PLC has provided an update on the planned M-PESA upgrade and associated disruptions.

In a statement on Monday, September 22, Safaricom announced that the scheduled M-PESA system upgrade was successful, and all services have now been restored.

Safaricom said customers can now access all M-PESA services, adding that it looks forward to serving all of them better by smooth service provision.

“Dear Customers, The scheduled M-PESA upgrade was successfully completed and all services fully restored. All M-PESA services are now available. We look forward to serving you better and providing you with seamless experiences,” Safaricom said.

This comes after an official customer notice dated September 19, 2025, which was about the scheduled system upgrade that would disrupt all M-PESA services, including aritime purchase.

Safaricom said the upgrade would take three hours between 12:30 am and 3:30am on September 22, 2022.

The Telecommunications giant stated that the maintenance is part of it’s ongoing efforts to enhance service reliability and deliver a secure and seamless user experience.

“For 18 years,M-PESA has continued to transform lives across Kenya connecting you,our customers to opportunities everyday. The upgrade is aimed at supporting Safaricom’s commitment to providing”always-on safe, secure and worry-free financial products and services,” Safaricom said.

Safaricom regularly conducts system upgrades to ensure it’s infrastructure remains robust and responsive to the growing demands of digital financial services in Kenya.
