The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has urged drivers transporting newly imported transit vehicles to stay alert following a violent robbery incident along the Mombasa–Kampala highway.
Investigators report that the attack occurred on May 6, 2026, near Mutomo area in Mtito Andei. A driver ferrying a Subaru Impreza from Mombasa to Kampala encountered armed criminals who had set up a roadside ambush.
“In a premeditated move, a motorcycle with two pillion passengers emerged from a thicket onto the highway and blocked the driver’s path,” the DCI reported.
“Shortly after emerging from the thicket, the attackers deliberately positioned their motorcycle across the road. This forced the driver to slow down and assess the unexpected obstruction, giving the gang a chance to proceed with their plan,” they added.
The suspects then escalated the deception by staging a fake emergency. One of them pretended to be disabled using crutches to appear vulnerable. This tactic successfully convinced the driver to stop and offer assistance.
Once the vehicle stopped, the situation escalated quickly. One suspect drew a firearm and attempted to seize control of the car. The attackers then forced their way into the vehicle, turning the incident into a violent hijacking attempt.

As the confrontation intensified, the suspects assaulted the driver while struggling for control. During the scuffle, the firearm discharged accidentally, killing one of the attackers instantly. The remaining suspects fled on a motorcycle, abandoning their accomplice and the injured driver.
Police officers arrived shortly after the incident and rescued the driver. They took him to Kambu Hospital, where medical staff treated and discharged him. Officers later moved the deceased suspect’s body to Kambu Hospital Mortuary as investigations continued.
“Drivers transporting transit vehicles are strongly advised against stopping for unknown individuals on the road,” DCI advised motorists.

In addition, the agency urged drivers to report emergencies directly to police instead of stopping along highways, noting that criminal gangs now exploit staged distress situations to trap unsuspecting motorists.
Finally, the DCI confirmed that detectives have launched investigations and continue pursuing leads to arrest the suspects who escaped.
