Kenya Met Lists Areas Expected to Experience Heavy Rainfall Over the Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a weather forecast highlighting areas likely to receive heavy rainfall over the weekend and in the coming days.

In its latest outlook for the period between May 8 and May 12, 2026, Kenya Met has warned that several parts of the country will continue to experience rainfall, with heavy downpours expected in some regions.

According to the department, rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and some parts of the Coast, the Southeastern Lowlands, Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

Heavy rainfall events may occur in some parts of Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley.

Kenya Met Weather Forecast for Key Regions

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley, mornings are expected to have rain in a few areas throughout the forecast period.

Afternoons will be marked by widespread showers and thunderstorms in several places, while nights will experience occasional showers in some areas.

Counties in these regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

In the northwestern region, covering Turkana County and Samburu County, mornings will generally experience rain in a few areas during most of the forecast period. However, sunny intervals are expected on May 12.

Afternoons will be mostly characterised by showers and thunderstorms in a few places, while some days are likely to see scattered showers. At night, showers will mainly occur in a few areas.

Weather Forecast for Nairobi and Surrounding Areas

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and its environs, mornings will mostly be cloudy, breaking into sunny intervals, except on Saturday, 9 May 2026, and Tuesday, 12 May, when there will be a chance of rain in a few places.

Afternoons are expected to bring showers and thunderstorms in several places, while nights will have a chance of showers in a few areas.

Other counties in this region include Nyandarua County, Laikipia County, Nyeri County, Kirinyaga County, Murang’a County, Kiambu County, Meru County, Embu County, Tharaka-Nithi County, and Nairobi.

In the Northeastern region, covering Marsabit County, Mandera County, Wajir County, Garissa County, and Isiolo County, mornings are likely to experience rain in a few areas.

Afternoons will mostly experience sunny intervals, although some days may record showers in a few places. Nights will generally be partly cloudy.

Elsewhere, in the Southeastern lowlands, including Kitui County, Makueni County, Machakos County, Kajiado County, and Taita-Taveta County, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, mornings and afternoons will mostly be sunny. Nights are expected to remain partly cloudy.

In the Coast region, covering Mombasa County, Kilifi County, Lamu County, and Kwale County, as well as the Tana Delta, showers are expected in a few places during the mornings. Afternoons will mostly experience sunny intervals, with showers in a few areas, while nights will be partly cloudy with a chance of showers in some places.
