President William Ruto has dismissed claims that matatu operators were bribed in order to call off the nationwide matatu strike, which was caused by the recent fuel crisis.

Speaking during the Power Breakfast meeting on May 28, 2026, in Safari Park Hotel, Ruto said transport sector leaders independently decided to suspend the industrial action after discussions with the government over the fuel situation.

“I sat down with our transport sector leaders for about three hours to discuss the fuel crisis and explained to them where the issue was. When we finished, they told me they would call off the strike. I did not tell them to call it off. I know many people say they were influenced, but perhaps they were influenced by the facts of the situation,” Ruto said.

President Ruto’s remarks

The President’s remarks come days after public speculation emerged online alleging that transport leaders had been compromised to end the protests that had paralysed transport services in several parts of the country.

The strike was triggered by a sharp increase in fuel prices following the latest review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), which saw diesel prices rise significantly.

The protests disrupted public transport operations in Nairobi and other towns, leaving thousands of commuters stranded while others walked to their jobs.

Matatu Strike

After talks between the government and transport stakeholders, matatu operators officially called off the strike after President Ruto announced measures aimed at easing pressure on the sector, including a reduction in diesel prices during the next fuel pricing cycle.

Transport sector leaders had earlier denied allegations of bribery, insisting that the strike was suspended after negotiations with government officials over fuel taxation and operating costs.

The fuel crisis initially sparked wider debate over the high cost of living and how rising fuel prices affect transport and business operations across the country.
