President William Ruto has announced plans to build a new airport in Habaswein Town, Wajir South, and allocated Ksh 100 million to kick-start the project.

Ruyo made the announcement on May 31, 2026, while addressing residents during his development tour of Wajir County ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for June 1 at Wajir Stadium.

He said the current airstrip is located in the middle of the town, making it necessary to find a new location for a modern airport.

He told residents that once land is identified, the government will move forward with the project.

“I have told that Adoo Najir that the airstrip in the middle of the town should be moved. Let them provide land on the outskirts, and I will build a new airstrip there,” Ruto said.

The President added that the new facility will help improve transport and support economic growth in the area.

Ruto directed Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, who was present at the event, to ensure funds are included in the budget for the project.

“CS Davis Chirchir is here. Let him set aside Ksh 100 million to start your airport project here in Habaswein so that we can begin planning together with you,” he said.

The announcement was welcomed by residents who have long called for improved infrastructure and transport services in the region.

Ongoing Development Projects in Wajir

The airport project adds to several major developments currently taking place in Wajir County ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations.

Among the key investments is the construction of a new stadium with a capacity of more than 10,000 people. The facility is expected to host major events and improve sports infrastructure in the county.

The government has also built new tarmac roads linking the stadium to neighboring areas to improve accessibility and ease movement.

In addition, street lighting and other supporting amenities have been installed to enhance security and improve the town’s appearance. A Mini State Lodge has also been constructed in Wajir Town as part of the ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
