Experts Weigh in as CCTV Footage from Utumishi Girls Fire Sparks Privacy Debate

At least nine suspects connected to the deadly Utumishi Girls Academy fire will face 16 murder charges after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved their prosecution.

The decision came after the DPP reviewed evidence and findings submitted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which has been investigating the May 28 fire tragedy.

Investigators launched a probe shortly after the incident to determine the cause of the fire and establish whether criminal acts contributed to the deaths.

The case took a new turn after CCTV footage emerged showing several students allegedly starting the fire.

The footage led to the arrest and detention of the suspects as detectives gathered witness statements, forensic evidence, and other materials to support the investigation

Following the release of the CCTV footage, the suspects were arrested and detained while detectives continued collecting evidence.

Investigators examined the footage alongside witness accounts and forensic findings before compiling a report for prosecutors.

After completing its investigations, the DCI forwarded its findings to the DPP for legal review and guidance on the charges to be preferred against the suspects.

By approving murder charges, the DPP has elevated the case from a fire investigation to a homicide prosecution

DPP Raises Concern Over Rising School Arson Cases

Beyond the charges facing the suspects, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) expressed concern over the increasing number of arson incidents reported in learning institutions across the country.

The DPP warned that students and members of the public involved in setting fires or engaging in other criminal activities would face legal action.

“The DPP expresses deep concern over the recent increase in reported incidents of arson and other related acts of criminal conduct in educational institutions across the country,” the DPP stated.

More Than 100 Schools Affected

The warning comes at a time when cases of unrest in schools continue to rise.

According to data from the Ministry of Education, more than 100 schools have experienced arson attacks, while over 200 institutions have been forced to close due to unrest.

Authorities have raised concerns about the danger these incidents pose to students, teachers and school property.
