How to Change Passport Bio-data Like Names and Date of Birth in Kenya
Share
Changing bio-data on a Kenyan passport, such as names or date of birth, requires a formal process as the Directorate of Immigration Services does not allow edits on an existing passport.
Instead, applicants must apply for a new passport that reflects the correct details, supported by valid legal documentation.
To begin with, you must ensure that your identification documents are accurate and consistent. These include:
- National Identity Card
- Birth Certificate
If these documents contain errors, correct them first through the National Registration Bureau or Civil Registration Services. Immigration officers rely on these primary records, so your passport details must match them exactly.

Apply for a Replacement Passport
Once your documents align, proceed to apply for a passport replacement through the eCitizen platform under the Directorate of Immigration Services. To complete the application, follow the following steps:
- Log in to your eCitizen account
- Select passport application services
- Choose the replacement or change of particulars option
- Enter the correct personal details
- Upload the required supporting documents
- Pay the applicable fee
After submitting the application, book an appointment at an immigration office for biometric capture.
Prepare the Required Documents
When you attend your appointment, carry both original documents and copies. These typically include:
- Current passport
- National ID card
- Birth certificate
- Printed eCitizen application form
- Payment receipts
In addition, include any documents that support the correction you are requesting.
Provide Proof for Name Changes
If you intend to change your name, you must present legal proof to support the request. Depending on your situation, you may provide:
- A marriage certificate for changes due to marriage
- Divorce decree where applicable
- A registered deed poll together with a Kenya Gazette notice for legal name changes
You may also need to write a formal explanation addressed to the Passport Control Officer outlining the reason for the change.

Submit Evidence for Date of Birth Correction
When correcting your date of birth, rely on your birth certificate as the primary reference. Where necessary, strengthen your application with additional documents such as:
- A sworn affidavit
- Academic or official records confirming the correct date of birth
Ensure that all documents present consistent information.
Attend Biometric Capture and Verification
Next, appear in person at a designated immigration office for biometric capture. During this stage, officers verify your documents, collect fingerprints and take your photograph.
After submission, immigration officers review your application and verify your documents.
Once they approve the request, they issue a new passport with the corrected details as processing time varies depending on the complexity of the case and workload at immigration offices.
To avoid inconvenience, hold off on making travel plans until you receive your new passport.
