Gachagua Ready to Accept Court Ruling on Impeachment Case

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that the government bought the IEBC Chairperson a house in Karen worth Ksh 80 million to help President William Ruto win the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a public address on July 10, Gachagua said the move is part of a wider plan to interfere with the work of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the next election.

He called on the IEBC chairperson to explain the source of the funds used to acquire the house and raised concerns about possible influence on the electoral body.

“I want to challenge the Chairman of IEBC to confirm whether he has moved to Karen and how he bought this house. He has been in office for a year. His income is not sufficient to buy a house for 80 million. Is it true what Ichung’wah is saying, that the government has bought you a house in Karen so that you can bungle the 2027 general election?” he said.

Gachagua Alleges State Interference

Gachagua accused senior government officials of planning to influence the election outcome and said the alleged scheme involves local administrators working at the grassroots level.

He claimed that Deputy County Commissioners had been called to a meeting in Gilgil and instructed to set up a structure to engage chiefs and assistant chiefs ahead of elections.

“I just wonder, yesterday the fake Deputy President and Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wah summoned Deputy County Commissioners in Gilgil and told them to create an infrastructure today to meet chiefs and assistant chiefs who shall be given money for bribery on Sunday night, on an election night, to go and bribe people in every house,” he claimed.

Gachagua further alleged that chiefs and assistant chiefs were set to meet senior leaders, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Kimani Ichung’wah, as part of the plan.

He claimed the officials were told they were effectively in charge of the IEBC and would play a role in determining the election outcome.

“In fact, Ichung’wah went ahead to tell the government officials that they have bought a house in Karen for Mr. Ethukon at 80 million. Ethukon did not have a house in Nairobi, he was living in Turkana,” he said.

Questions Over Source of Wealth

Gachagua also alleged that the IEBC chairperson, Ethukon, moved from Turkana and acquired the Karen house within a short time in office, raising questions about affordability.

He maintained that the circumstances surrounding the alleged purchase point to possible external influence and called for transparency from the electoral body’s leadership.

The claims come as political activity begins to rise ahead of the 2027 General Election, with growing focus on the independence of key institutions.

However, the IEBC has previously denied claims of election rigging and warned leaders against spreading unverified information.

The commission says it remains committed to conducting free and fair elections and has urged leaders to avoid statements that could lower public trust in the process.
