Samuel Kamau Ngotho is one of the most prominent politicians in Nyandarua County because he won the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) ticket in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

The win has put him in the spotlight in one of the most important by-elections in the country, with political analysts considering this contest as one of the litmus tests of the increasing influence of the party of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Mt Kenya region.

The political journey of Ngotho spans more than a decade.

It began at the grassroots level before he ventured into county and national politics.

In all these years, he has managed to build a reputation as a people’s politician with a network of people within Ol Kalou Constituency.

The recent event of winning the DCP ticket by a landslide puts him in the spotlight once again as he campaigns for the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Early Life, Education and Background

Samuel Kamau Ngotho, commonly referred to as Samuel “Sammy”, is a resident of Ol Kalou constituency in Nyandarua County.

Samuel comes from the Kikuyu tribe and maintains a cultural background that has influenced his political personality.

Ngotho is a university graduate with experience as an agricultural economist.

But the institution he studied in, the year he graduated, and other academic credentials remain undocumented to date.

Likewise, there are no known verified reports on his age, and much of his early life history remains unknown.

Political Pathway

Ngotho joined politics as an elected official in the year 2013 when Kenya introduced the county governments through devolved governance.

He was able to secure the seat for the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Karau Ward and became the first MCA for the ward within the political coalition of TNA/DP.

In 2017, due to differences in terms of party nominations, Ngotho stood for the position as an independent candidate, and though he put up a tough fight, he lost by a margin of less than 200 votes.

Instead of stepping back from politics, he decided to pursue parliamentary politics.

The 2022 Parliamentary Elections

In the 2022 General Election, Ngotho was a contestant for the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat under the banner of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

He garnered around 19,380 votes but ended up losing to the late Member of Parliament David Njuguna Kiaraho, who won back the constituency seat.

This did not deter Ngotho from being a significant figure in the politics of Ol Kalou.

Service at the Office of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Ngotho joined the Office of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after the 2022 elections.

He worked in the position of Protocol Officer and Political Advisor.

Ngotho’s service went on until after the impeachment of Gachagua, after which many of his associates from the former Deputy President’s office joined DCP.

Establishing DCP in Nyandarua

Among the first people to organise DCP in Nyandarua County is Ngotho.

Working as the County Coordinator for the party, he was instrumental in organising DCP at the grassroots level through mobilisation and recruitment.

His efforts were highly successful in establishing DCP in Nyandarua before the upcoming Ol Kalou by-elections.

DCP Ticket Winners

For the DCP nominations, a total of nine people contested for the slot, making them some of the most fiercely contested primaries in the area.

With 12,957 votes polled, Ngotho was declared the winner over Paul Waiganjo, who scored 4,978 votes.

Other candidates who ran included: Gabriel Gathure, Engineer Peter Karanja, Wakili Kiragu Wathuta and Isaac Ndirangu, amongst others.

After winning the nominations, Ngotho called for unity and appealed to the defeated candidates to support him in the by-election campaign.

The By-Election in Ol Kalou Constituency

The by-election was necessitated by the passing away of MP David Njuguna Kiaraho.

The IEBC then set the date for the by-election for July 16 and approved the candidacy of nine aspirants.

This election is getting much interest from the politicians of the nation because it is seen as an election between DCP and the ruling party UDA, while Jubilee will also send one of its contestants.

Some of the contestants include Samuel Kamau Ngotho of DCP, UDA’s contestant, Jubilee’s contestant, Edward Mathenge, who is a nephew of the deceased MP, and other independent nominees.

Some of the top DCP members like Rigathi Gachagua, Cleophas Malala and John Methu have given their backing to Samuel Kamau Ngotho for the by-election.

Family Life

Ngotho is a married man.

His wife has been seen accompanying him on public occasions like Thanksgiving services at church and political rallies like those held at Deliverance Church, Ol Kalou.

Apart from that, there is very little verified information about his children or his wider family members.
