Irungu Kang’ata Joins Gachagua’s DCP After Leaving UDA

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has officially joined Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP party after leaving President William Ruto’s UDA party.
In a statement on Friday, July 24, Gachagua welcomed the governor to DCP, describing it as a party of the future.
Gachagua said DCP has grown into a national party with millions of followers and thousands of prospective aspirants ahead of the next polls.
“Welcome home, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, where you belong. Today at Wamunyoro Residence, I was pleased to receive my younger brother, Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Governor of Murang’a County, as a member of our party, DCP, the party of the moment and the future. Since its inception, the DCP Party has grown into a strong national party with millions of followers and thousands of prospective aspirants ahead of the 10th August 2027 polls.” Gachagua said.
DCP Aims for Majority in Parliament
Gachagua said DCP’s main goal is to have a majority of members in the Senate and the National Assembly in the next Parliament.
Currently, he mentioned that the Party has three Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and a Member of Parliament (MP).
“We now have a Member of the National Assembly and three Members of the County Assemblies from across the Country, reflecting the face of Kenya. As we prepare for the next General Election, we are determined to be the majority party in both Houses and the majority across County Assemblies,” he said.

Among Rigathi Gachagua’s allies present were DCP Secretary-General designate Senator John Methu, DCP National Organizing Secretary Senator Mithika Linturi, and Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu.
Others present included Kirinyaga Senator John Kinyua, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango, and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa.
Irungu Kang’ata Leaves UDA
Kang’ata announced in May 2026, that he would not seek re-election on a UDA ticket in the 2027 General Election.
He cited differences with President Ruto over political strategy, citizen engagement and policy priorities, while saying the differences were not personal.

“I express my sincere gratitude for the long and meaningful relationship I have had with His Excellency the President. Our association stretches back to 2013 when I first served as Member of Parliament for Kiharu. Over the years, as MP, Senator, and now Governor, we have worked closely in advancing shared goals for our people,” he said.
“I also had the honour of serving as Senate Majority Whip, a role that further deepened our cooperation and mutual respect. These are not small matters, and I acknowledge them with appreciation.”
