FACT CHECK: The Truth Behind Viral Claims That “Mzungu Chokoraa” Is an Undercover CIA Agent

Nairobi Chief Officer for Public Participation, Citizen Engagement, and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, met the American man popularly referred to online as “Mzungu Chokoraa” after Kenyans widely shared claims that he was homeless and living on the streets.

Many social media users tagged Mosiria in posts urging him to intervene, claiming the man had been abandoned. Concerned by the reports, Mosiria traced him and arranged a meeting to understand his situation.

“Many people tagged me in a viral video of this American man, who has been widely referred to as the ‘Mzungu Chokoraa,’ claiming that he had been abandoned and was living on the streets. After I shared the video, his wife reached out to me and requested that I visit him to understand the true situation,” Mosiria said.

Video of Meeting with Mzungu Chokoraa Sparks New CIA Speculation

After Mosiria met the man and shared the video online, the narrative quickly shifted. While initial claims focused on homelessness, some users began speculating that the man could be an undercover intelligence operative.

The video, which showed Mosiria interacting with the man in a nice home, drew mixed reactions. Some users now claimed the man appeared too articulate and composed to be homeless, fuelling fresh theories that he might be linked to the CIA.

Following his visit, Mosiria dismissed claims that the man was homeless and clarified that he has a family in Texas; married to a Kenyan wife for over 17 years.

“This evening, I met him and his family, and I learned that he is not homeless. He is a married man, a father of five children, and has been living with his family in Texas, USA. According to his family, he has bipolar disorder, and his condition became worse after the passing of his mother. He is currently under medical care and takes prescribed medication,” Mosiria said.

Mosiria explained that the man sometimes leaves home and wanders during episodes linked to his condition, which likely led to the assumption that he was homeless.

The family also said he collects recyclable materials out of personal interest in environmental conservation not because he lacks shelter.

Kenyans Question Explanation, Raise CIA Claims

Despite the clarification, some Kenyans continued to push the CIA narrative. Gideon Odera Junior linked the man to intelligence discussions he had heard before.

“If you have listened to John Kiriakou’s podcasts, this is a CIA agent. Very intelligent fellow. And always armed with a rifle,” he wrote.

“He might be CIA,” Loktari M. David added.

At the same time, other users shifted focus to the family, questioning how they managed his condition while claiming that there might be some hidden agenda.

“This is a cooked story. How do you stay in a house as a wife and let your husband into the streets alone, knowing very well he’s not mentally okay? Where are the curtains? This is a joke,” Heppy Joy wrote.

“Geoffrey Mosiria KE there something fishy. Talk to that mzungu in private utapata ukweli.” Rose Bett added urging Mosiria to investigate further.

Family Rejects Homeless Claims

In response, the man’s wife, who is Kenyan-American, strongly defended their family and rejected claims that she had abandoned him.

“I know my husband, I know him very well. I have been with him for over 17 years now. I’m not about to leave him because he is sick. This is something that a family work together. I am not going to leave him just because he had a few bad days in Kenya,” she said.

The man also spoke out, describing himself as a responsible father and addressing reported threats.

“I am a responsible father and about five days ago my wife got a call that I will be stabbed to death. From the streets, they are going to kill my family too, so if you think you can do it, you will never touch my family, you will never touch me,” he said.

Mosiria Urges Public to Show Compassion

Mosiria maintained that the man is not homeless and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation or stigmatizing him.

He also appealed to Kenyans not to give him alcohol or marijuana, warning that such substances could interfere with his medication.

Mosiria urged the public to treat people living with mental health conditions with dignity and understanding, emphasizing that such challenges can affect anyone.
