The Linda Mwananchi Movement, associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, is reportedly considering registering a new political party as it seeks to establish a formal political outfit ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to political activist and blogger Maverick Aoko, the proposed party is expected to be known as the Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP). This is according to blogger Maverick Aoko, a close ally of Babu Owino.

“Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP). That is the name of the new outfit the Linda Mwananchi honchos have settled for.”

However, the proposed registration could face challenges as the movement works to agree on its leadership structure and the distribution of senior positions.

Ukombozi Party Leadership Positions Under Discussion

Aoko noted that the disagreements over the party positions could potentially delay the formal launch of UPP and create divisions within the wider movement.

She noted that the positions expected to form part of the discussion include the party leader, deputy party leader, chairperson and secretary-general, among other senior positions.

In addition, Aoko stated that another issue reportedly complicating the formation of the proposed party is the question of its presidential candidate.

The political activist claimed that some leaders associated with the movement, including Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo, have not consistently endorsed Sifuna as the movement’s presidential candidate during public rallies.

The development has reportedly raised questions about whether the movement has reached a consensus on who should carry its presidential ambitions in 2027.

Babu Owino and Sifuna’s Role in Linda Mwananchi Movement

Sifuna has been one of the prominent figures associated with Linda Mwananchi, while Babu Owino has also played a visible role in the movement.

Despite the reported differences, Aoko urged leaders within the movement to remain focused on the broader objectives that brought them together.

She noted that Sifuna and Babu were among the figures who helped establish the Linda Mwananchi initiative before it expanded into a wider political force.

Aoko warned that internal wrangles within Linda Mwananchi could weaken the movement and potentially benefit its political opponents as she urged those associated with the initiative to prioritise what she described as the broader “ukombozi mission” instead of allowing competition for party positions to create divisions.

Linda Mwananchi’s Earlier Party Registration Bid

The reported plans for the Ukombozi People’s Party come after the Linda Mwananchi Movement previously faced a setback in its attempt to formalise the movement under its existing name.

On August 4, 2026, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi said the Registrar of Political Parties had declined an application by the movement to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Movement, citing public interest concerns.

Omondi, who was among the leaders who met the Registrar to seek clarification on the decision, said the group had challenged the refusal and argued that there was no legal basis to reject the proposed name.

According to the MP, the discussions centred on the interpretation of Section 8 of the Political Parties Act, which sets out requirements relating to the registration of political parties.

He said the meeting with the Registrar was cordial and that the official had agreed to review the earlier decision.
