KNH Announces Death of All Five Quintuplets After Four Died Earlier

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed the death of all five quintuplets who were referred to the facility from Thika Level Five Hospital for specialized tertiary care after being born extremely prematurely.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, KNH said the new-borns were delivered at a gestational age of just 25 weeks and had critically low birth weights, making their condition highly complex from the time they were admitted.

“Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) wishes to inform the public of the tragic passing of all five quintuplets who were referred to our institution from Thika Level Five Hospital for specialized tertiary care,” said the statement.

“The babies were born at an extremely premature gestational age of 25 weeks and with critically low birth weights, presenting significant clinical challenges from the time of admission,” KNH said.

Efforts To Save Babies

KNH said its multidisciplinary neonatal team, comprising neonatologists, nurses and other allied health professionals, provided specialized care and made every effort to support the five babies.

However, despite the intensive medical intervention and dedicated efforts by the healthcare workers, all five new-borns succumbed while receiving treatment at the national referral hospital.

“Despite the dedicated efforts of our medical teams and the specialized care provided, all five new-borns sadly passed away,” the statement read.

The hospital described the loss as a devastating tragedy and expressed its condolences to the bereaved family.

KNH Stands With Family

The hospital added that it recognized the profound pain of losing five new-borns and stood with the family during what it described as an extraordinarily difficult period.

“KNH is deeply saddened by this devastating loss and extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the mother and the entire family. We recognize the profound pain of losing five new-borns and stand with the family during this extraordinarily difficult period,” said the statement.

Babies born at 25 weeks are considered extremely preterm and often require intensive medical support because their organs, including the lungs and brain, are still in the early stages of development.

Such new-borns also face heightened risks of complications associated with very low birth weight and premature delivery.

The hospital did not disclose further details about the circumstances surrounding the births or the specific causes of death beyond the complications associated with extreme prematurity.
