CS Wandayi Appoints New EPRA Boss and KETRACO CEO

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary (CS) James Opiyo Wandayi has announced new appointments to senior leadership positions at three key institutions in the energy sector.

In a statement, Wandayi announced the appointment of CPA Tom Odhiambo Imbo as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).

Mr Stephen Kipsang Busieney has been appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Geothermal Development Company (GDC).

Besides, Wandayi has appointed Eng. Edward Mwirigi Kinyua as the Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The Appointments

“Pursuant to the provisions of the State Corporations Act, Cap 446, the Companies Act, Cap 486 and the Energy Act, Cap 314, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, has approved the appointments of the Chief Executive Officers of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd (KETRACO), the Geothermal Development Company Limited (GDC) and Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) as follows,” read the notice in part.

These appointments place new leadership at three institutions with key mandates across Kenya’s electricity transmission, geothermal energy and energy regulation sectors.

KETRACO is responsible for developing, operating and maintaining Kenya’s high-voltage electricity transmission infrastructure.

The company has also been involved in the expansion of the national transmission network to support electricity supply and facilitate the evacuation of power from generation projects.

Their Experience

Odhiambo brings experience from within KETRACO, where he has served in finance and strategy functions.

According to the company, he has more than 19 years of experience in finance management across the public and private sectors and previously served as the company’s Acting General Manager for Finance.

EPRA is the statutory regulator responsible for regulating the electricity, petroleum and renewable energy sectors, among other functions provided under Kenya’s energy laws.

The appointments come as the government continues to oversee the development and regulation of the country’s energy sector, including electricity transmission infrastructure, geothermal resources and the wider energy market.
